Independent? Are yorkies by nature very independent? I thought that they were very people oriented, and like to follow their human around and liked attention and were good companion dogs, but a coworker of mind said that they are very independent dogs, is this true? |

Ok, well that's good...I like a dog that can be feisty and somewhat stubborn (I'm kind of like that myself). I was just worried that they were so independent that they don't ever want to snuggle or be around you. I know that when they're puppies they will be very active, and even when they are grown they will be little investigators, and I like all those things but I'd also like a dog that would want all my attention! Is this a yorkie? |
They are no different than people, in a way... ;) They all have different personalities. Some are more cuddly than others. Some are more outdoor-oriented than others. If THEIR mom is around, though, they will follow you everywhere you go and that includes the bathroom! :D I've always found mine to be somewhat independent, but when they want mom they'll come looking for you. It has been my experience that when they are puppies that they are less cuddly than as they age, although they still do have their cuddle moments. :) They are a most intelligent little doggie and like to play, play, and play and going for walks is their favorite activity as well as chasing and bossing the squirrels around. They are a very curious and active little dog. They will investigate everything in their environment and their yards. :D |
One of my dogs is a little independent but the other one is very dependent. They are both cuddlers when they want to be. |
okay, you guys are great! I've read all the stories about your babies here for a few months now and I've really fallen in love with this breed, so I don't think I'll change my mind about having a yorkie, they are all just so darn cute and full of spunk! Is there a way I can tell what the pup's personality will be like when I pick him out? I know that whichever personality I end up with I'll fall in love with, but out of curiosity, is there a way to tell the personality early on? How can you choose when they are all so adorable? |

I think it depends on how you raise them. My girl is independent but always begs to play, she si a tomboy at times, but I also can put her in my arms and she will rest like a baby. She also loves tummy rubs. :thumbup: |
I think it just depends. Charlie will just want to be by himself and other times he is like static-just wont go away :) |

IMO you can change them but I knew right away Chloe was an outgoing, curious cutie when I visited the Breeder. Of the 3 puppies, she was jumping around, playing, trying to engage me in play and I asked if I could go on the lawn with her. She willingly followed and could not wait to play outside. She is still like that. Lacey, on the other hand, was a little timid, more of a lap dog than Chloe. After one and one half years, they are about the same. That doesn't mean Lacey isn't fun, she is, plays, etc. but she is the one at my feet all the time, will cozy at my head on the sofa and would stay there all day if I would let her. So, I think a breeder visit is a must, so a person can see the interaction. It might not matter in the end on which one you pick, but you have an opportunity to check them out. |
Loki snuggles when he is cold, tired and at night he has to be touching me. He is independent, but not like you might think. He needs to interact with us, just not snuggle all the time. He wants someone to throw his ball, or to play tug, or he will try to impress us by doing all of his tricks to get a treat. If he is is sleeping on the couch and I get up he will follow me. He does follow me around the house. I can't go upstairs or to the bathroom without him following me. He likes to be in the same room as us, but not usually sitting next to us. We have done obedience with Loki and he listens to us, which is awesome and we teach him tricks all the time and he likes to please us (or he at least likes to get treats!) If he gets hurt (from FLYING down the stairs) he will come to us. If he needs something he will come to us. He will sit next to the bed and cry for me to pick him up and put him on the bed too, even though he will just jump right off. He investigates EVERYTHING. He loves EVERYONE, people and dogs! And he makes me laugh constantly because he is so silly!!! |
