Do you let your yorkie play with your cat?

They are really getting along well with each other, they play and groom each other. I'm just a little worried that my cat might hurt her, should I let her?

How old is your yorkie? My Poppy is 6weeks old and her and my cat get along fine. I do not leave them alone in the same room together and when i am out the house the cat is not allowed in the same room as Poppys xpen. But as long as i can keep an eye on both of them then they get along fine :D xxxxx

Yep, i have two yorkies and they both love to play with the cat and vice versa. All are grown, now, but they grew up together.

Lizzy loves my cats. The cats tolerate her. They don't play together, but when Liz sees them, she runs up to them and kisses their faces until they make her quit. She loves them! Liz is three and two of the cats are a year old, the other is ten, so I don't worry about anyone getting hurt. The cats aren't interested in Liz and they can get away from her easily enough.

Well they seem to be getting along right now. What is the size differential between cat and dog? Is your cat a pretty mellow cat? Does the cat have their claws?

It is always a worry none the less. My Razz at 6lbs terrorizes my 18 pound Maine Coone Cat. Now our cat is very gentle, and after 2 other dogs coming into the home very resigned to doggy play. But still I stop razz from jumping on biting, and literally terrorizing Karma. You never know one day Karma might have enough and one swipe of 5 claws could really hurt Razz.

If your pup is playing gently with her and she is playing gently too, it sounds like a match made in heaven. Just superivse the play. Don't let them on their own when you are away from home.

All our dogs play with the cats. Our Yorkie is the only 1 smaller than the cats!!You will be able to tell when it gets out of hand, you know each one's temperment, so as long as you have one ear listening in on the playing it should be fine. It's fun to watch them interact, they're all precious.:animal-pa

I have 3 cats ranging in size from 15 lbs to a 22lb Maine Coon. Bridget (who is 10 months old) terrorizes all of them. Jumps on their backs and sits on them while she bites their ears....she has NO manners!!! They are grown (ages 10 to 5) and they tolerated her until she pushes them to the limit then they usually just give her a swat (they do not have their claws and are strickly indoor cats). But when I'm not at home she is gated in her room because they get the "zoomies" and run around this house at lightening speed - I'm afraid something may accidently happen (I'm just not sure who will get the worst of it....sometimes I totally fear for my cats lives..haha - j/k)

Ok this sounds more like Rosie and my cat. I was reading the other posts thinking my two just don't get along and everyone else have pets that do. I have one cat and she is 18 years old. She weighs about 15 pounds which is pretty good size. She don't do much but as soon as she is around Rosie goes completely nuts. She tries to bite the cat and is barking in her face. Most of the time the cat will just look at her. However, every once in a while we get a good swat and loud yelp. Rosie will back off for approximately 5 seconds then here we go again. To make a long story short, I keep them seperate as much as possible.

Princess (my little yorkie) and our little kitten (Molly) love to play together. They are best friends.

I warn though, if your yorkie has a hair tie or bow make sure you take it out of her hair. My little kitten (Molly) we think took out the hair tie from Princess hair yesterday. One moment it was in here hair for most of the day and then suddenly..... gone..... after she was playing with Molly. We are keeping a close eye on Molly even though our vet says she will pass this elastic hair tie.

I try to supervise their play times together, but Molly will jump into Princess's Xpen to play when we are busy doing other things.

My cat and dog play all the time. It is hilarious when they chase each other and wrestle.

Jax, the cat, doesn't have his claws and when he has had enough he goes to a place Piper can't get him.

Tinksmygirl 08-16-2010 04:23 PM

Tinkerbell loves to play with Claire our calico kitten. Claire is about 3 weeks younger than Tink, but she is already bigger. I worried a little at first, but they have actually taught eachother how hard to bite and will stop when either of the two gets tired. They are such great companions and really enjoy their play time.

I have two senior cats, my hubby always keep their nail cut, but I always supervise them, my cats are huge:rolleyes: and they get tired easy of my dogs, specially Phoebe, she tired all of us, she has to much energy:p

My cat is not declawed, my don't hurt dog he's always been so careful when playing, but sometimes I can hear my dog screaming.

kjc 09-05-2010 11:18 AM

Screaming is not good. If your cat is not declawed (which is bad bc it's inhumane) it would be wise to trim their claws... just take the tips off about 1/8 inch. Front and rear. After a few times your kitty will get used to having it done and will tolerate it being done.
I have 3 kitties... two of which are bigger than my Yorkies (a 10 DSH, a 12 lb Himmy, a 22 lb Bengal). I have a cat tree for the cats to be able to get up and away from the dogs if need be. Most times the cats prefer to play with each other and the dogs play with the other dogs but occassionally intermingle, usually involving sneak attacks by the cats!:D

SophieKatesMom 09-06-2010 02:11 PM

Sophie Kate plays with Avery all the time, they get along okay (not great but okay).

When SophieKate was a baby I did keep an eye on Avery because he is a lot bigger.

If Avery gets tired of SophieKate he slaps her and of course that brings on the new drama of her carrying on for a few minutes.
