LP and hardwood floors? Hi everyone... I was just thinking about something the other day, and I don't know the answer, but I'm sure someone here does. I just got my baby about two weeks ago, he is absolutely wonderful. But I was thinking one day, our apartment is all hardwood floors, and I was wondering if all the running and playing and twisting could loosen his knees or anything? The vet said they feel a little loose but they'll most likely tighten as he gets older (he's about 14 weeks now). I was thinking, though, if he's always running and sliding around, would that make them get looser still? We have an area rug in the living room so I've been trying to do the bulk of our playing there, so he has some traction. And if this IS something I should worry about it, is it only a problem while he's developing, could the floors still damage him when he is done growing? Thanks in advance Nadine |
good question-- I can see slippery wood floors being a hazard for these little dogs and I wouldn't allow running or rough play on them. You should train against jumping on and off furniture regardless of the floors, but this could be particularly dangerous on bare wood. |
I'm not convinced that hard wood floors would be any worse than carpet. If you think about it, the carpet provides a surface to gain traction. That traction on the lower part of the leg can hold it there while the upper part twists. But definitely agree with not allowing the jumping up and down off the furniture. |
I don't let him jump off furniture because he's so small and I figured he would probably get hurt if he did. But now I won't let him for this reason, too. Thanks :) What does everyone else think about the floors? |

Tortional force, ie twisting, is dangerous to all joints, be they human or doggie. Straight Compressive force - think about jumping up or down, without torque is harder on hips and elbows. Here with the small bones and joints, risk of fractures, and or dislocations is high What concerns me a lot is these little guys get up to so much speed when running and playing. Inside and out. I would also try to limit the hopping up and down to greet you, sometimes they can remind me of Jack in the boxes. Walking on lead with your dog is very very good, these walks serve to build the upper and lower thigh muscles, which will help to keep the patella in place. Swimming is one exercise I love to do with all my dogs. So great for their joints, aerobic, and a good muscle builder. Treadmill is another good one, if your weather is lousy, and or for some reason you can't get out to walk your pup. Again with everything you start slowly building up the exercise time. I'll be interested to hear what others say on this topic. |
