What is the color 'blue' in a dogs coat? I know I might sound stupid but since I'm German I have an excuse...;) What does it mean when a dogs color is called blue? My dh said once that Mikki's coat is turning 'blue' and I couldn't see anything blue on her just some gray... so I guess it's a doggie thing????? |

Knowing What an Ideal Yorkshire Terrier Looks Like - For Dummies Colors Although Yorkie pups are born black and tan, their color changes as they mature. The ideal coat color for adult Yorkies is blue (actually a deep, steel gray; no silver, black, or bronze mixed in) and tan. The AKC also recognizes black instead of blue and gold instead of tan. Bottom line? Your Yorkie can be any of these color combinations: blue and gold, blue and tan, black and gold, and black and tan. Not only are these colors the only accepted colors, but they also must appear in the accepted places: On the body: Blue or black from the back of the neck to the tip of the tail. On the head: Golden tan or gold on the fall, with a richer tan/gold on the ears and muzzle. On the chest and legs: Tan or gold on the chest. On the legs, the tan/gold should go no higher than the elbow on the front legs and the stifle on the hind legs. |
We hear from the old timers - the blue should look like the shade of the inside of a gun barrel. This help upi get a picture in your mind of the blue. With yorkies there are many shades that they can actually come up with due to their genetics. Some adult yorkies are very silver and some are very dark, even black and never turn. Some yorkies change to the blue very slowly and others can show breaking before 6 months, predicting a light blue to silver coat. I like to see them breaking at 6 months under the front shoulder first. Females will often continue to lighten over years, due to their hormones, where males dent to hold on to thier color longer. This is one reason why yorkies are so hard to predict if they will be the right color to show. We have to wait a long time to see how they are breaking. One can also look at the tone of the skin color - pink usually means they will be lighter and a blue to the skin tone means darker coat. Think of the hair shoot (follicile) as an empty tunnel like optic tubes and the color they project from the follicile with be determined by their skin tone. |
Thanks! That is very informative... So... Maggie (4 y.o.) with her silver hair has a pink skin but Mylo (7 months) who is supposed to become a silver one too has a dark blue skin so his silver will be darker like a light blue, right? Minnie (3 y.o.) has a black coat with some blue strands and Mikki (2 1/2 y.o.) has a dark skin but her hair is blue with getting a bit more blue towards her rear. Maxie is black but has blue and golden strands getting more towards his little cute butt too... Pheeeeuuuwwwww.... I'm sure glad I neither show nore breed!!! |
