Beau Hi All! My husband and I have a 28 month old yorkie named Beau. Two days ago he had a mild seizure. I did not realize what was happening at first but as soon as I did I called the vet. They told me not to worry about bringing him in unless he had another spell. So far he has been fine and acting like normal but I still worry and have to have him close to me at all times because I worry that he may have another spell. From the research I have been reading it seems like seizures are common in yorkies. Any advice is greatly appreciated! Thank you!! |

And yes Yorkies are known to have seizures, but that doesn't mean it isn't something that should be investigated. And to make a moot point it may not have been the first one you've observed, your boy could have an earlier seizure without you seeing it. |

Welcome to YT. Does Beau have a head tilt, is he circling or walking a little drunk? Or did he just have a seizure with out any other symptoms? I am asking because my little girl has a brain disease that is fairly common in toy breeds and seizures are one of the symptoms. By the way, I love Poulsbo!! |

He had a seizure without any other symptoms. He was sleeping, and then he just flew off of the love seat and stumbled to where I was sitting on the couch. We went to the vet today and I really do not know how I feel about the answers I was given. They took Beau in another room to do blood work and the doctor sat down and started asking me about his seizure. After describing it, he said that he had a mild/moderate seizure. He then said that Beau would definitely have another seizure in his lifespan. So after describing more information he left the room and then came back and said that Beau was very healthy and that he was positive that his blood work would come back negative and that his seizures would not be caused from his heart or liver. Well then he went on to telling me Beau was most likely epileptic and would need to be put on medication (Phenobarbital) after he has his next seizure. I guess I am just a little overwhelmed and he did not seem to answer any of my questions. I do not understand how my dog can be healthy and that his blood work will come back negative, but then in the same breath tell me that he will have more seizures and is probably epileptic. |
Yorkies may be prone for seizures but not healthy Yorkies. Seizures are not normal. To the OP, I understand your questions about your Vet. Maybe you could take his file with you for a 2nd opinion. |
The reason his diagnosis was epilepsy is simply because there is NO test for epilepsy so after ruling out all the other causes... epilepsy is the sole reason left. |
Welcome to YT!!! Our Mikki is 2 1/2 y.o. and also has mild to moderate seizures about 3 to 6 weeks apart. The vet calls it 'idiopathic epilepsy' (sp?) When she feels a seizure coming on she always comes to us. We then hold her and cover her eyes b/c that seems to help her. The seizure lasts about 30 seconds to a minute. Mikki is NOT on any medication b/c we were told that als long the seizures are not more frequent it is tolerable and the medication can have severe side effects. We never could figure out why she has seizures or what triggers them. After a seizure she is a bit tired but back to her old self in no time. I hope your little boy will have no more seizures and if he does that it is as manageable for you as it is for us! |
You are not using any of those spot on flea treatments are you? |
