When playing becomes fighting Now I have two dogs. Woody is 14 months and Mia is 4 1/2 months. Mia is pushing Woody around. I think he should defend himself. He does but sometimes I have to pull her back. I'm not always going to be there to save him. Now I seperate them when I leave home, but eventually I want them to be able to stay in the EXpen together. Is it harmful to Woody if she is pushing him around? He has been fighting back a bit, but when is it too much? I only heard him yelp with pain once, and I have not seen blood. There is no snarling (yet) They could go on for hours, I love watching them play! |
Personally, I am a believer in letting them work it out as long as there is no blood drawn. Even though you might feel bad about it, Mia might be the more dominant dog and if you constantly interfere with them, you might make things worse. (Not saying that you are interfering) Of course, I should probably say that I am not a professional.... But you do need to make sure that Mia and Woody see you as the most dominant. |
I have two, 4.7lbs & 7.4lbs. The little one does, once in awhile try to pick on the bigger one who is younger than her. When the picking turns into fighting, I let out a loud screech, and then grab the little one and put her into her kennel. Usually the loud screech is enough to freak them out and it stops. However, in the kennel, she has quite time by herself. Which she hates! She has begun to associate the screech and "time-out" with her behavior, and her "picking" has begun to subside substantially. Good luck with your two...I swear they are just like children.... |
I agree with not interfering unless things get out of hand. Eventually, Woody will let her know when he's had enough. I would keep them separated for a while yet until things calm down and you know that everyone is safe and content. Ringo still gets too rough with Lucy sometimes and that is when we stop the play and go for a walk or something. I would step in if I heard one of them squealing or yelping in pain and absolutely no blood should be drawn whatsoever. That is over the line of what is acceptable. |
