Puppy poops in his crate Ok, we just got a 3 month old Yorkie puppy and immediately began crate training when we brought him home. We have one crate in our bedroom with his bed in it and he sleeps in at night and have had no problem with. He does not cry or anything. We have another crate downstairs for during the day for when we cannot supervise him. So he's been doing really well with peeing outside but the problem is pooping. The first day, he pooped right outside his crate. We said No and immediately took him outside again. Second day through today (3 days) he has pooped in his cage on his blanket. I was told and read over and over again that they will NOT poop in their "den". Yesterday and today, I had him out, he didn't go, then brought him into his crate and he pooped within 3 minutes. Why is this happening? What am I doing wrong? Please help!! |
Welcome to YT! Congrats on your new puppy! You might not be taking him out often enough. Set a schedule and stick to it like glue. For example, if you decide to take him out to potty every 2 hours, take him out and have him on the piddle pad or whatever for 15-20 mins. Say whatever potty command your going to use, and when he does PRAISE PRAISE PRAISE and treat. The treat should be a special potty treat. You could use cheerios for that. If puppy doesn't poop, bring him back inside and back in the crate for 10 mins then try again. You're just starting with the training, so please be patient as you will have a few accidents here and there. Also, the crate might be too big. If he has enough room to poop on one side and hang out on the other without encountering his poop, then it's too big. Crate training, from what I've read, works if the crate is big enough for them to stand, turn around, and lie down comfortably. It shouldn't be any bigger than that. |
How much time per day is he in the crate? When he does defecate do you throw it away, or are you placing it out where you want him to go? Are you vocal-training him as well with a 1-word command? I am not a big fan of crate training. I used an xpen to train mine that way they had the freedom of an open space, too play around in as well as potty pads in case they needed to relieve themselves. edited to say: and Welcome to YT! |
Thanks for the replies. His crate does have a divider so maybe I'll try to use that to make it a little smaller. He doesn't have too much room, but more then what you described. He's not in the crate very long at a time actually. I have a 5 yo daughter who loves him to pieces and will bring him out to play with him and lay with her (she knows not to carry him) and we are home most of the day so he's not in too much. Only when he cannot be supervised. I threw the poop away. Do you suggest taking it outside to show him that's where it belongs?? I hadn't thought of that. And when we go out, I do use the potty word. And when he goes pee I praise him like crazy. Believe it or not, he doesn't like treats too much, but I hadn't tried Cheerios. I'll try that. Thanks for the tips! |

Both of mine pooped in their crates too. When Ally was little, we used to put her in it when we left the house. She got so upset, she would bounce the little kennel across the floor. It was full of runny poop too. For months we kept her downstairs at night also. We always wondered, as we walked down the stairs in the morning, if she left us a little surprise in her kennel...which she did most of the time. At the time, I had one other dog, 12 year old pek. As soon as we moved Ally's kennel upstairs at night and locked her in the family room with my pek when we left the house...everything stopped. Nothing at all any more. She was lonely, especially in the kennel. She needed to hear me breathing at night and the company of our other dog when we were gone. The same has worked for my other pup too. YAHOOO!!! PETEY POOPED OUTSIDE THIS MORNING!!! I am so relieved!! I just wasn't going to put him in his crate until he went or I was going to put his downstairs bed in his crate until he went. Don't need to now. Thanks for everyone's feedback! |

Hi y'all, My 8 month old yorkie has really dry skin. She is spayed, has regular baths (2or 3 times per mo). Someone suggested oil on food, which BTW she eats royal Canaan & Science Diet 1/2&1/2. We live in Idaho with about 20% humidity & cold. |
