A Little Concerned ... Hi Everyone - This is my first litter (only one female yorkie in the litter) - She is pretty big, and my concern is - IS SHE TOO BIG FOR HER AGE? She's about 1 pound 16 ozs. She's only 5 weeks old and she's a bit pudgy - which is darling - but is that normal? Will she thin out when she starts running around? She's just now teething and starting to run around - but she eats non-stop and she always cries for more. Poor Mommy - but my concern is - are they suppost to be a little big at this age or do I have a over weight puppy because she's a single puppy. Should I talk to my vet about it - he even joked about her size the last time he saw her. Please let me know if I'm overfeeding my baby - Katie |
4 Attachment(s) Here's a few pictures of her (Maggie) ... Thanks again - Katie |
What is the weight of the parents ? |
shes too cute though!! OH MY GOODNESS!! |
She is so cute. I just love her. |
wow what a big girl. so cuttttttttttte |
I'm concerned because both mom and dad are only 6 pounds and she's looking like she's going to be BIG. Thanks - she is a doll - just big. Katie |
Hmmm-I think the only way that I could tell would be if I could keep an eye on her for a year or two. You are going to have to give her to me!!! Sorry, I don't really know too much about ideal weights, I was just trying to scam you into giving me that darling baby!!! |
wow what a cutie! that is a little big i would think. i got charlie at 8 weeks and he was just over a pound. He is now 7-8lbs. Maybe she will just be a little bigger :) |
wow - i'm not sure about weights and stuff - but she's already a pound and only 5 weeks. I guess I'll keep u posted. LOL - That scam sounds interesting but no matter her size I think I'll keep her. Her moms just so tiny compared to her. It's funny. Katie |
First, an only child makes for a whopper puppy. They do slow down their growth once they are weaned, which you should be starting at this age. I do not ask a vet about normal breeding stuff. They seem to be more learned in illness and not wellness. So, talk with your mentor about your concerns.. And, is your baby 1 lb at 5 weeks or 2 pounds at 5 weeks? You triple the 8 week weight or double the 12 week weight for a ballpark figure of their adult weight. But, when a mom is producing the usual amount of milk and only one horsey is getting it, the puppy will most likely be fatter if not larger in sheletal growth. Bet I didn't help you one bit, did I? LOL I can say that your baby is a cutie.. |
Is she 1 pound or 1 pound 16 oz (2 lbs)? Sorry I'm confuse. If she is 1 pound 16 oz (2 lbs) then she is consider big for 5 weeks in general. However, each dog is different, the weight guideline is just an estimate. If you don't want her to grow too big, you just have to make sure you don't overfeed her and give her lots of exercise. |

I agree, if she is 1lb (16oz) then she should only be around 4-4.5 lbs full grown, that isn't big. But if she is 2lbs (32oz) thats big, and who cares, as long as she is healthy!! :p |
She's just right! Adorable! I bet she's gonna be fine. It's almost time for Mom to stop feeding her, and that's gonna be rough. Most pups gain quite a bit right before then to give them extra until they can eat on their own. She's gonna be fine. |
what a doll baby! :) |
