Hiking Hey all, just wondering how well these guy's tend to do on hikes? I'm going for one with friends Monday that is supposed to be 4 hours with a break somewhere in the 2 hour range. I'll be bringing a backpack carrier for him just in case he does get tired but I would like some input. Do you think 4 hours is too much? There are going to be some steep climbs, which obviously I can carry him through if he isn't up for it. In addition, other than water and food what should I bring along for him? You think Nutrical would be necessary? He is 8 months old now and I've never needed it before, but you think he may need a pick me upper? What kind of mosquito repellants can I use on him, I'm getting some Off! for me, but I know that's probably no good for him... PS I'm so excited about this hike!!! I think he should be fine seen as you have the backpack carrier for him.. Just let him walk and as soon as you see him slowing down/getting tired pop him in the carrier then bring him out in half an hour/an hour. Have fun on your hike! :D |
Keep him hydrated, don't let him walk too much (as he could scrape up his paw pads), and he should do great:D Or you could find him some comfy little hiking boots:laugh: If you do, please post pics:D Oh, be sure to pack up a first aid kit for dogs, I think there's a list here somewhere you can search for;) These little ones love to go everywhere with us and I love to hear about all of the fun stuff everyone does with their doggies! The most adventurous thing I've ever done with mine were trips to the local parks and swimming in the pool:laugh: |

I like swimming, in recreation and sports, the propulsion of the body through water by combined arm and leg motions and the natural flotation of the body. Swimming as an exercise is popular as an all around body developer and is particularly useful in therapy and as exercise for physically handicapped persons. It is also taught for lifesaving purposes. For activities that involve swimming. |

I've taken Vinnie hiking with me in the past. He's a bigger yorkie (about 13 pounds) and can keep up with me for about a mile or so. And then he poops out. Definitely make sure to take breaks and if he is slowing down at all, carry him. Remember, dogs really want to keep up with us and will push themselves a lot harder than they should. Just watch him, especially if it's warm out. Make sure to carry water, plenty of food, and I would take the nutrical too. Hopefully you won't need it, but I'm a big fan of "better be safe than sorry." Also bring a first aid kit with you that is specifically for dogs. Finally, when we've gone hiking over rocky terrain, I've used doggy shoes - Neopaws are the best! (Dog Boots Shoe Neoprene Jackets Dog Sweaters NeoPaws) They can really save your dogs' paws. |
Sounds like a great place to hike. We took Maxine and Carlo hiking in the Cave Creek Mountains in AZ. Carlo had a great time, and could go for hours. Maxine was another story. Had to carry here all around. She rejused to walk up, did not like going down, and would walk wherever it was flat. Carrying here is comporable to carrting an M-14 rifle. On level ground, she used to go 3 miles at a healthy clip. Be prepared to do some carrying. Plenty of water available, and a Doggie Cell phone so she can phone for help if you get lost. Have a great time. Next year we are heading back to Italy and Sicily. My wife has relatives in Bari and Rome, and mine are further South, home of La Cosa Nostra. |

1 Attachment(s) Here is one pic, one of my friends just posted on FB, once I get home and am not exhausted I'll get them uploaded and post. He did a great job, spent about 70% of the hike either being carried or in his bag, turned out to be a bit more aggressive of a hike then I planned. Anyway, he did have a great day and I may have to look into dog boots, I spent 2 hours pulling (gentley) various types of vegetation out of his fur, with emphasis on his paws. Luckily after doing the removal and a bath he was back to being clean and untangled and we both slept very very well all night :D He was the most photogenic of the group I think :p |
