Yes there are quite a few floppy eared yorkies. Mine would be, but I shave her ears and they are about 3/4 of the way up. She will be 2 in January. It is normal. If you want to try to get them to stand up you can also tape them. I have never done this so not sure exactly how you do it. Of course it is no guarantee that they will stand up. By the way welcome. |
Welcome to YT!!!! We would love to see a picture of your new baby! Do you have a name for him yet? Yes floppy ears are normal. Not all Yorkie ears stand up. We love them just the same! Can't wait to hear more about your new little one! Again, Welcome to YT!!!! :yorkiesar :yorkietal |
Welcome. From reading the posts on here, it seems to be about fifty-fifty on the ears. I am a new yorkie mom and the big selling point for me was the fact that when I picked him out at six weeks, his ears were already up. Well, one was about 2/3 up and the breeder said they would both be up when I picked him up and they were. I am considering buying two females from a friend but her yorkies ears are all floppy. I hesitate because of this. I eventually want to breed my male. I would rather have a female with erect ears. But they really are cute and precious either way. |
When I got my puppy, he was 8 weeks old with floppy ears. At that time, I don't know anything about their ears. I thought naturally their ears will go up when they grow older. Then I found this forum and learnt about taping their ears. Initially I thought it was cruel to do it and it willl be painful for them. When my puppy was 13-14 weeks, I began to worry that his ears will never stand. I started to do a lot of research on taping yorkies' ears. I found this site (I can't remember the name now) that said not all yorkies' ears will stand by itself. However, when they're young (before 6 months), you can make them stand by taping and massaging their ears. The instruction was simple and he use gauze to support the ears and at the same time use medical tape (won't rip off the hairs) to tape their ears. I followed the instruction and just taping Spikey's ears for 3 days, they're standing now. I've put the instructions in the thread "taping puppies' ears" a few days ago. If you cannot find the thread, send me a private message and I'll give you the instruction. It is very easy and not painful at all. I know because Spikey is a cry baby, if it hurts, he will scream and cry. So far, he has let me tape his ears and never made a sound. I'll keep taping for 2 weeks. Tape 3 days, remove it, rest a day (you must massage his ears 2 or 3 times a day), and repeat the taping procedure for 2 weeks. As your yorkie is already 1 year old, it might take longer time. I think there's still hope. |

Welcome to YT and to the world of Yorkdom. The breed standard calls for prick ears but there are flop-eared ones all over the place. As a matter of fact--I have my first flop-earred puppy. One of my Biewtis has down ears. The others pull the tape off as soon as I put it on.. |
Hello and welcome to YT. I have seen a few Yorkies with floppy ears. |
