How cold is too cold without a sweater or coat? Princess doesn't have a sweater or coat yet. The temperature here has been low to mid 30s in the morning and at night. I have been taking her out for short walks but she doesn't seem cold at all and she doesn't shiver so I'm assuming she's not cold. She does shiver when she gets a little wet from the rain. Is there a recommended temperature when a yorkie should have a sweater or coat on or should I just watch and see if she feels cold? I figure if she's not whining then she must be fine. I am right? :aimeeyork |

:wavey: Hi I must have missed welcoming you to YTalk!! I always put sweaters on all three of mine (one Chi) when I feel cold, if your chilled or cold your baby must be cold :rolleyes: but this is when I feel it is cold enough :) |
Jbarile, Thanks for the welcome! We've only had her since Saturday night so we are still buying her some things. I thought about the baby rule: If you're cold they're cold, if you're hot they're hot but she doesn't seem cold at all and I think she will be uncomfortable with a sweater or coat since she fights me to put on her harness. :sad: |
I would say your right on the fence for sweater weather. Where i live we are a little bit warmer right now than you and i put a light sweater or a t-shirt on my girls. Just because they do tend to shiver if standing still and not running around. It kinda also depends on the size of your Yokie too. Obviously a 2 lb Yorkie would get colder then a 12 lb yorkie. Right now it's basically your decision tho because it's not really cold enough to worry about anything. But if they do start to shiver then i would say put something on them. |
Maximus has been wearing sweaters on his walks for the last 2 weeks....it is getting cold here in NY..probably around 30-40 degrees..and I know I am wearing a jacket...his nose is cold when we get in the house even with his sweater on..poor baby |
Hi and Welcome. :wavey: I don't know if there is an exact temperature, but I go with the if I'm cold they are cold rule. They have lighter t- shirts, sweaters for when it's in the sixties and heavier ones when it gets colder. When it really cold they would rather snuggle in front of the fireplace. |
This reminds me of something I saw this morning. It was a chilly morning. I saw an older lady walking her little chihuahua. She had on a coat and a scarf around her neck and they were walking down the sidewalk. The little chihuahua wasn't on a leash, but he was walking down the sidewalk right behind her. He was freezing. His little back was hunched up and I felt so sorry for him. There she was all bundled up in a coat and scarf and that little bitty thing didn't have anything to keep it warm. :( I agree. If you're chilly, so is the puppy. It sometimes takes them a while to realize that they are cold, too. They are so busy investigating. :D |

My question is when is it too hot?! I love to dress my babies, so I look forward to their winter wardrobe!! LOL Seriously though, I would agree with the others - if you feel cold, then the pup is probably cold too... |
Wow I dont know but I dont think it would hurt them to run right out to go then right back in. |
I'm in Massachusetts and lately its been cold. My two 5 lb. yorkies always wear a sweater below 50 degrees, depends on the wind chill factor too. They can never be too warm I don't think, better then being chilled. Sometimes in our house, their little feet feel cold and their body cold even tho they sport the full long hair style, then they wear a lighter sweater. But I'd say now is the time to put a sweater on when outside at least. Mine are not outside dogs, they use puppy pads and get plenty of exercise inside but for those time that I do take them out, they are covered and warm. Walmart has some good prices on little sweaters now. |
Hi! I keep Sweetie in a t-shirt in the house pretty much all year -their normal body temp is 101 degrees. I was sitting in the floor one day playing with my pup and I got chilled (had A/C on) - so I'm sure she was cold. I've had a shirt on her since then. I know they rarely get "too" warm as they have no undercoat like regular dogs do - Have fun getting to know your new pooch. I never thought I'd be as attached to Sweetie as I am - I dropped her off at the vet Thursday to have her teeth cleaned (and a couple pulled) and cried as I left. She did just fine and is almost back to her old self. Cyndi |
I think a lot depends on the dog itself. Some shiver around 50 degrees. Gracie generally wears a sweater from 40-50 degrees if she is out just for a pee break. For long walks at this temp or below 45 or early morning or late at night she wears a foggy mountain dog coat that is like a horse's blanket with criss cross straps under her belly. She hates to wear anything but gets used to me putting in on after about a week. These are very adjustable as to size and grow with the dog. They have a website, check it out. |

Welcome to YT!!!! I think it's really up to your baby. Princess isn't cold inside the house, but Poncho our Chihuhua is always cold. We can always find him in a sunny spot. He loves to wear his sweaters. They are all different, but I go with the rule, If I have a sweater on, Princess has one too. At first I had a hard time getting her to wear them, but now she lets me dress her. :) :) |
