Dumb Yorkies? Has anyone else had people refer to yorkies as "dumb"?? Darcy got out of the gate today and my neighbor got her and after I walked up to take her from there we were talking. I made the comment that she has no comprehension of what a street is (meaning she's never been allowed to play outside so she doesn't know that there is danger) but anyway, she said, "yeah, dumb yorkies" but in a cute voice as she rubbed Darcy's head... I've had other people tell me that yorkies are "dumb"... why do people have this stereotype??? |
Because they havent owned one to realize how smart they are. Mine are smart as a whip maybe not street smart but smart |
It's true that people have this stereotype. So many people assume that because my CJ is small he is dumb and yappy and therefore they don't like him. Trust me, there big dog is probably dumb and yappy, my dog is not. I just think, karma will get them. My dog will live 15+ years and there's will be lucky to see 10. Its a twisted sense of humor but it keeps me from cussing them out. :p |
Dumb yorkie is an oxymoron :D |
i heard this a lot when i told everyone i wanted a yorkie and the i was told the reason people think yorkies are dumb is because some one made a test based on how many repetitions it takes a dog to learn a new command and i guess Yorkies score kinda low meaning they need more repetitions. |

I have not heard of this before... I have heard that Yorkies smart. My Suzi responds to certain words which makes her understand what I am saying. I have heard that Yorkies are hard to train because they are strong willed. But, that does not mean that they are dumb. |
my pennys super smart Sienna is slower but not dumb i had a dobermen that was dumb asa post though and my nieces cocker/bishon is pretty slow |
Well my mind went back to the "dumb blonde" thing. Yorkies are so cute maybe that's where it came from. In the last 11 months I have found that they are to smart for their own good. :-) |
I've never heard that they were thought of as dumb, when I told people I was getting one, they had other stereotypes attached to them, such as mean ankle bitters, kind of ruined my enthusiasm, but I still got one, mainly because so many members of Yorkietalk we sooo in love. Sterotypes die hard, but everyone who meets Joey falls in love with him. |

Obey First Command: 70% of the time or better INTELLIGENCE OF DOGS - The ranking by breed Also, [begin show off moment] try to tell Jackson he's not smart!;);) /end show off moment. I do think people don't give Yorkies enough credit for all that they can do. But that's humans fault. Yorkies are known as the Holiday Paris Hilton purse dog who can't do anything but look pretty... and thats simply not the case! |
No one has ever said that to me- they always say how smart they are - I can't believe someone to say that to you- it's hurtful. They should be oh so lucky they never said that to :) I would have to school them on just how amazingly smart our furbutts are. |
I've never heard that sterotype about Yorkies. I think mine is pretty smart. I think terriers in general are smart dogs, just strong-willed; therefore, they need a strong leader. Leslie |

I haven't heard anyone say that yorkies are dumb but whenever I say I have one, and even before we actually took possession of her, people would just roll their eyes and make a face. It was getting so I hated to tell anyone my new puppy was a yorkie because I was so tired of 'the look'. |
There is one commonality in all creatures: some have more "smarts" and good sense than others. I have two Yorkies and one is smart as a whip and other...hmmm, does in fact seem a little "dumb" -- either that or smart enough to know she's going to get that treat whether she does the trick or not! Or possibly she isn't interested in certain things. Not picking on her...just stating the facts. |
Jasmine can see me just walking toward the drawer where her treat bag is kept and she begins doing tricks..........that is not dumb......that is smart and by HER choice. And, besides, yorkies are by far the most loving little furbabies ever!! |
i think alice is pretty smart, ive had her a short time but she has already learned several tricks. she does have the puppy attention spand and she tends to get overly excited for a treat that she just starts doing all of the tricks untill she think ill give her a treat. but she still knows the commands. i agree with the intelligence vs stubbon ness aspect. she can be stubbon but she knows what to do. haha btw that video is adorable!!!! i hope i can teach alice half as many things as you did!!! :] |
Yorkies are anything but dumb ;) |
Macy is in agility and is one of the quickest learners in the class. She outshines a rottie that weights about 100 pounds. I don't put bows in her hair or dress her up when we go to class because no one would take us seriously. |
Buster is very smart. He only needs to be asked one time to do something. Family and friends are amazed at the things he can do especially when is only asked one time. Maggie is stubborn. She wants "room service", etc., but when she isn't being stubborn, she is very smart as well. Of course, the smartest of them all, Jackson!! And Uni!! If I could ony get one of you to come to Texas for a week. |
I think of Rizzo as strong-willed not dumb...i.e. he won't do a trick if he doesn't see a treat in my hand...though his re-call is really getting good, since he comes instantly to "treat time" just started saying "treat, come" and now he is almost always coming to just "come" woohoo! but when I'm teaching him new tricks or re-inforcing the old ones, he won't do a thing until he see's the treats. So I call that smart, not dumb :D |
