Are Sliky's part of the yorkie family??

Please can someone put me straight. I've always thought I had a yorkshire Terrier, She is a Silky, longer snout, and silky fur... but like you get the Tea cup's and Standards, I thought a Silky was like just another type of yorkie??

I was reading on here about mating..and i came across a post that seemed to say Silky's are not yorkies??

I am very confused. :confused:

She was advertised as a yorkie. We were also told by the breeder she is pedigree he just didn't register her because the pup's were not planned!.

Please can someone fill me in??

Some yorkies have a silky coat. Then there is a silky that is a breed of dog that looks very similar to a yorkie. Im sure yours is a yorkie if the breeder says its a yorkie. Silkys are not as common here in the US like yorkies are

NO they are not the same breed. There is a breed called Silky Terriers. And then there are Yorkshire Terriers. Often times ppl confuse the two, not in the least part because Yorkies have silky coats:)

If you go to the Kennel Clubs site, you are in England right? you can look up some pics of the two different breeds, and gain a better understanding.

In terms of what your breeder said, I'm sorry but that is hogwash. There is something else going on. Look at your papers and see the registered names of sire and dam.

For the record, there is no teacup yorkie or standard yorkie...there is simply a yorkie. :)

It is hard to say from a picture. There are alot and I mean alot of yorkies that look like silkies because they werent bred to the yorkie standard. She is a cutie though thats for sure

Go to the Kennel Club and or the AKC site for both breeds. I don't know how old your girl is. The other thing you can do is look at the show dogs on here that are purebred Yorkies.

:Look at Brooklyns, Topknot, AMD, go to their profile name and click on it most have pics posted.

Mine is in my avatar which you can see, I too have albums.

Finally if you want a definitive answer you must do a DNA test.

Silkies are a cross between a yorkie and an australian terrier. Thet were first bred in Australia and originaly called the Sidney Silky Terrier in 1933
A silky is 1/5 longer then they are tall, a yorkie should be square
A silky is heavier boned and does not have the amount of coat a yorkie has
A silky NEVER has a toplnot, hair is parted to the side on the head.
A silky should always be more terrier in the head and more terrier in attitude

Thanks everyone, god it really is so hard to tell.

Lola's ears never stood up..so they are floppy and small...bless her and looking through pictures on this site the yorkies can look very different... many have the longer nose like Lola.

She is almost 4 years old and is still very black on her back..with only a small amount of grey.

But im going to keep looking... It's really bugging me now.

As mentioned earlier, a DNA test will be the only way to know for sure.

Make sure if you do get a DNA test you know where you are getting one from! Most of them out there are scams, especially since some of them don't have a wide variety of breeds to test your dog with. It can be a bit costly as well.

I suggest talking to some experiences Yorkie breeders, then some experience Silky breeders. If you feel they can't help you I say go to a vet and ask what DNA test they recommend.

Yep! I've talked to 5 reputable Silky breeders in my area who told me they can't say for sure, but they are 99% positive Jackson could be a Silky. But I dunno. Silky's are not as common in the US, but I'm really curious about a DNA test but haven't been able to find one I'm confident in.

There was one on TV (yeah I know lol :rolleyes:) but it had over 400 breeds to test from but it wasn't a commerical or anything it was just mentioned on a show. I wish I could remember the name of it! But anyways the point is that there are some good DNA test out there, just most are trash lol!

I didn't even know silkies could have tails.
Yorkies and Silky's can have tails, too :) They are all docked when they are 2-3 days old.

I thought Jackson looked like my Lola in the face...funny that he may be a Silky too, he was one that stood out and also Tinyterriers, April looked like her.

Lola is has very small build tho and looking thro some pic's of silky's they look a bit more stocky to me.

Jackson's so cute! I love the fact that he's big enough to romp around with other dogs. My baby gets a little timid..I'm hoping he'll grow some so that he doesn't get run over by other dogs at the doggie park.

to me....she looks more like and Australian terrier...which do look like yorkies...like another poster said...not all yorkies look alike...I have to yorkie girls and, although you know they are yorkies, they both have a different look...Sadie is darker and Lillie is light...their faces are different as well.

technically no they aren't, they are a terrier, but they aren't a yorkie, sometimes yorkies look like silkie's but they aren't you should ask your vet the next time you bring her the vet.

I went to a dog show, and there were silkies and yorkies, they are both so cute, but I was amaze of so many people have silkies thinking that they are yorkies:animal-pa

Well, the thing is, a well bred standard Silky and a well bred Yorkie are very easy to tell apart, IMO. The problem arises when BYB'ers and puppy mills, etc, ruin breeds like Yorkies since they are so popular. You get SO many out of standard Yorkies that it IS often hard to tell the two apart. If they all looked how they were supposed to look, it'd be super easy to tell the differences.

Oh definitely! I tend to think Jackson is a Silky (got him from a BYB, no papers, etc) but don't know for sure. His body structure is just exactly like a Silky really. I guess I'll never know, unless we do a DNA test which aren't always accurate.

I love both breeds!! I've really been looking into the Silky alot for a second dog and looking thru reputable breeders.
