Preparing for puppy Maybe I'm way over thinking this, but I am so excited to get my baby and I want to have everything ready before she comes home. Let me tell you what I am thinking of setting up for her and you can give me your opinions. I am thinking of getting an small exercise yard/pen and in it putting a small crate for sleeping, a pee pad, and using this area as her area until I get her housebroken. I am wondering if feeding her in this area would be good too? So it's her comfortable "home" inside our home. Does that make sense? I want to train her outside but since I live in SD I think she might want to have a pee pad when it's blizzarding and below zero degrees outside. I have a big house with lots of steps so I am guessing keeping her in a small area would probably be best when she's training? Any input you have would be great. Thanks! Amy |
Or... if I'm getting a pen should I just get a bed instead of a crate? Or, get a bed to put inside the crate? I want everything to be perfect! :) |
Your setup sounds perfect and is the same that many on YT have used for house training. Here are a couple of tips I have learned along the way... if you use disposable potty pads you should use the tray to secure them...that way it's harder for the puppy to use them as a toy and they protect your floor. don't put a collar on your puppy while it's in the pen...it can be dangerous and possibly deadly to your puppy. I would use the crate with the door removed so your puppy can get used to being in a crate...sometimes a crate is a neccessity and it's more pleasant for everyone if they are already used to being in one. Are you using the washable potty pads or disposable? I started out with the disposable and switched to the washable because my girls were tearing up the disposable ones. I regret that now...they think anything soft under their feet is a potty pad so rugs and carpet are fair game. If I had it to do again I would have found the tray a lot sooner and never started using the washable pads. |
It sounds good! I know you can get pee pad trays at Wal-Mart and PetSmart. That was the best purchase I have made! It made them look neater in my house and made Piper more aware of where she was supposed to go. |

I like the set up you have... it's close to what I did with Harley... instead of pee pads, what about a grid system? In the US they have WizDog or UGO Dog, systems, it's a lot cheaper than pee pads, and everyone I've talked to who uses it (I'm in Canada so we make a homemade system) has never had a problem getting the dog to go outside too. just put some pee pads underneath until your pup gets the scent of where to go, then you should be good from then on. Yay! Welcome to YT. I had my baby's place all set up before he was home! It's too exciting to just sit and wait!! I have an ex pen for Bailey. His pad, food, toys, and comfy bed are all in there.. When I can't watch him, he stays in there to rest, play, and poop! I think it's very convenient. :) |
