Introducing my bunny to my yorkie pup I searched on this forum for similar threads, but did not find any. The vet today advised me to introduce my bunny, who is one and a half years old and has lived with us for a year, to my new yorkie. The puppy is nine weeks old and does not live with us yet. But since the breeder lives so close by, I am able to bring the puppy over for visits nearly every day to get used to the place. The vet said the puppy should meet the new bunny ASAP, not only to get socialized with the bunny, but also so the pup can see that our house is already the bunny's home. Anyone have any experience with such introductions. Advice and ideas? |

I'm not really sure how a dog will react to a bunny but when my dogs see bunnies they wanna chase them! lol I'm sure with the right amount of socializing they can be friends! I have a parrot who gets along with my two yorkies after months and months of socializing. ALWAYS be there to supervise!! |

Well I introduced them today. Emmett (the bunny) was in his double x-pen in the family room. It is open in the day, and he was having a second breakfast. Max (the nine month old Yorkie was in his soft carrier. Max was fascinated by Emmett but soon started barking. Emmett was did not freak out as I thought he might. My husband said the whole thing went much better than expected. We think Max wanted out to meet the bunny. The bunny was not really threatened by him. I pet the bunny a lot in front of Max and so did my husband. My husband also fed Emmett some of his favorite treat: dried cherry bits. Emmett ate them which he will never do if he is upset. |
Where did the puppy go?! Emmett the bunny has been sniffing all around Max's carrier this evening, climbing on it and sticking his head in it, trying to figure out where the puppy went! It is too funny. |
That's funny how Emmett is now looking for Max!! I had a bunny and an adult Yorkie before together. I had my yorkie, Molly first and she was about 3 years old and my dear hubby bought me a bunny for an anniversary gift. The bunny became a house bunny, Annie, for anniversary, and I just remember Molly wanting to play with her. Annie would do a little thump thump and then run and Molly would run around the house and the yard trying to catch her!! Molly would come in panting and Annie would come in the house and thump to try and get Molly to chase her again!! My only negative was that if Annie was startled in the house she would shoot a few pellets out and Molly would come along like a dust buster and eat them!! I think it is great that you are socializing them early, Emmett will surely be Max's friend and hopefully visa versa!! |
Love your story Nanci! Well, Emmett the Bunny has been marking his territory with a couple of his "cocoa puffs" here and there ever since he saw the puppy. I guess he wants to impress upon us the this is his home first. Right now the Yorkie is only one quarter of the bunny's size. Maybe Emmett thinks that Max (who has big upright ears like his sire) is just a tiny bunny! LOL! |

Does your puppy have all his innoculations already? I wouldn't let the two meet until those have kicked in. |
i was nervous when i first got my yorkie, because i didn't know how she would react to my bunnies. i had two bunnies before i got milu, and i kept them separated for a while because i know bunnies are territorial. but milu loved the bunnies, the first thing she did every morning was run downstairs to see the bunnies. i would do supervised play time for them. i adopted another bunny after milu, and i let them hang out together all the time because that bunny's personality is more relaxed than my other two bunnies. they all get along great now. but i would say it really depends on the dog. i know someone who's house bunny was killed by their dog. so you do need to be careful and watch them to make sure. i don't worry about my dogs attacking my bunnies because my dogs are small and they are not as aggressive as my bunnies. so it just really depends on the dogs personality. you can view pictures of my bunnies and my dog in my album, and also here are a few links of pictures of them, enjoy: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/my-...-bloopers.html http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/my-...-bloopers.html |
Pix!!! 2 Attachment(s) Okay, here they are! :-) They are hard to photograph because neither holds still very long except when sleeping. |
I would be afraid that Maxine would go after the bunny. She attacks her 134 pound Brother, imagine what she would do to the rabbit. Good luck. |
My vet, who is my bunny's vet as well, suggested that the two meet ASAP. I don't think bunnies have anything that a dog can catch. They are very different species. LOL! ;-) In fact, bunnies do not need any innoculations themselves. They are pretty safe. My bunny is a house rabbit, by the way. He never goes outside and has free range of the house in bunny proofed areas (i.e. most of the house). He is litter trained and a clean-living bunny. ;-) |
Play attack, or for real attack? What kind of animal is her brother? |
