great yorkie coat information
 

I was very fortunate to speak via email with cookie that owns jonanyorkies@cox.net, in my opinion she has one of the best sites filled with several articles on the breed, coloring, pegmentation and care. I e-mailed her regarding how to tell if a puppy will have the true silky coat or the somewhat thicker coat also known as either a soft coat (part silk) or the more difficult to maintain the wooly coat and least desireable and what age can a person tell what they have. Another question, when will a coat start breaking to its true color?

On this page, look at the 3 week olds. There's 2 pictures from 2 different people. The first picture I would say the pups will have a modified silk coat. The second picture the pups are pure silk.

Schatzie definately falls under the catagory of "least desireable coat", hahahaa but, I love her so much anyways.

My dogs coat falls under undesirable also. His black mixes into his golden. I think it gives him a scruffy look that I love. Schatzie is an adorable dog. The way her golden is shaped on her face she looks like a little teddy bear. Very cute indeed. I love looking at the pictures of other peoples puppys/dogs. They all have their own facial characteristics.

With so many new yorkie owners that have recently joined the membership, I thought that this post would be a good one to bump to the top as it appears to have a great source of information regarding coloring.

The link that is provided above is written by someone who has been around yorkies for a long, long time and has studied these traits in great depth.

Wonderful info! I love that "life of a Yorkie" page! Its one of my favorites!!!

As far as Joan Gordon... I LOVE her book! What amazing info! I am always referring to it and it has just given me even more of an appreciation of the development of standard! To read what has gone into creating the beautiful blue and gold coloring and the creation of the temperment of this wonderful breed is just baffling! I have enjoyed every word on every page of this wonderful book!

It's funny that you just posted this because I was gonna post a question that pertains to this. You see, Riley is 9 months old and his coat is very wiry and thin compared to TJ. TJ is only 3 months old and he is very soft and has very thick hair. His hair feels like silk. I was going to ask if he will stay this soft and if his hair will get any thinner. Also, do Yorkies shed? Cause TJ is shedding as a puppy and Riley did too, but now that Riley has his adult coat, he doesn't shed. Thanks for posting this.

by Joan B. Gordon and Janet E. Bennett. I think it is the only book out that has
a whole chapter on "breaking patterns"

Wasn't that a great site? Loved loking at the dogs at different times of their lives.
By the way, does anyone know if when you are letting their hair grow out long, do you still keep triming the tip of the ears? I have been doing this, but was wondering if that is correct! Does it stop growing there, or would it just keep getting longer?
