A Yorkie and a baby (first post) 1 Attachment(s) Hello my wife and I have a 2 year old Yorkie named Zuki. (He is named after my motorcycle which is a Suzuki.) My aunt was Zuki's breeder so he has been a part of our life since the day he was born. Zuki is a tough little guy, who has taken on everything that life has thrown at him. His next challenge will be coping with a new born baby. Our first child came in to the world on Wednesday Aug 4th. We are going to introduce Zuki to our son tomorrow. We were given a little advice about introducing them from the child birth classes we took. I was wondering if anyone had any experience or advice on this topic. |
Congratulations on your new baby and your cute furbaby too! :) I'm sorry I can't help, but You came to the right place for great advice! :) |
Welcome and Congratulations. I had a 7 year old male yorkie when I had my daughter many years ago. I had my Mom bring my dtr in the house when we came home from the hospital and I went to see Zorro right away. We put the baby in her crib and I spent some time with him. Later when she started to cry he couldn't figure it out. Later that day I was sitting on the couch with my daughter and she had a knit hat on as she was a preemie and Zorro cam up and snatched it off her head. He was always the sweetest thing so I was surprised. After that he would sit next to her when she was in her carrier on the floor. like he was protecting her. We never had another problem with him. I have heard to bring something like a blanket with the baby's smell on it and give it to the dog but not sure if it helps or not. I think Zuki will be just fine. |
I will eventually have to deal with that as well, BUT I just wanted to say that your furbaby is SOOO cute!!! |
:) congratulations to you and your wife on the birth of your baby :) your yorkie baby is adorable ;) sorry i forgot to welcome you to yt , :) you will love it here , love jill n poppy xx :aimeeyork |
Introduce them gradually, never leave your dog with your child unattended (especially as your child becomes mobile), and just use common sense. One of my Yorkies is actually somewhat child-aggressive (he hates children) but he seems to know to be gentle around babies. It's almost instinctual for him. You know your dog best, so you know what he will and will not tolerate. That said, Yorkies can be fragile (especially the smaller ones) so teach your little baby early on that he/she must be gentle with the dog. Most people say never let the baby crawl around where the dog's food is kept, etc, but my experience is that each dog and child are different. The good thing is that Yorkies being the size they are cannot really do much harm. Finally, make sure to carve out some special time for you and Zuki each day. Make sure he doesn't get neglected in the new-baby whirlwind. This will help him not resent the new baby and accept him as part of your family. |
1 Attachment(s) Thanks for the great tips everyone. I actually got to introduced them tonight. My parents own Zuki's brother, Ziggi. When we're away Zuki stays at my parent's house. When I picked him up, I brought him a shirt with our sons scent on it. He was very interested in the shirt. When we got home he went straight for the baby and we left him sniff a little. But that is all he wants to do right now. So we're going for a walk to calm down. I think that when he gets over the excitement of the new baby he will be fine. We plan on having time alone with Zuki so he doesn't feel replaced. After all Zuki was our first "baby". Here's another picture of Zuki and Ziggi last year. |
I have an 18 month old...and 3 yorkies. Since the day he's been home from the hospital they have been so great with him. We didn't keep them away from him at anytime and I think that has really helped a lot. When he was doing tummy time or taking a nap they all were right with him. Now the first thing he says when he wakes up in the morning is "Puppies!" Soooo cute!!! Good luck with the little one and congrats! Enjoy this time - it goes by so fast! |
Thank you TiaMaria. That was a very cute and very reassuring post. The baby is feeding and Zuki is sitting beside him as I type. |
i always heard before you introduce the dog to the baby, take something of the baby maybe beanie or what not and let the dog sniff it, so when the baby comes home he knows whos it is. hope this helps! and congrats! |
He is a total doll! Welcome to YT. |
