Is my puppy slow to learn? I know that I probably got her to young but she was 8 weeks old and I've ad her for a month and she still doesn't know her name. It's Zoi and I've really thougt about changing it. Do you think that she is slow, hard headed or just still young? |
Shes still young just give her time. |
I agree that your pup is still young. Some take a little more time. The problem could be the name or training/how you use it. Sometimes a dog will respond better to one name or another. Ideally, names should be 2 syllables and not sound like typical command words. The other possibility is how you are using the name. Sometimes if you only link the name to commands, "Zoi come, Zoi sit, Zoi no," the dog won't make the connection that Zoi is her name. Make sure you say her name when you are simply giving her attention and when you praise her. For instance, when you are petting her, say "Zoi, what a good girl. My sweet Zoi," and so on. Hope this helps. |
She's still just a baby! Give her time. She's not slow to learn & I don't think changing her name will do any good. Be patient with her & love her... |
She's still very young - she will get it. Also, sometimes if a pup's name is over used, they tend to not respond. Only use it when you really want her attention or for simple praise, see if that helps. Never use it as an add-on to a command word. |

My girl Penny at 12 weeks already know how to sit lay down and shake. My little one Sienna is 3 months and I have to have a treat right by her face to get her to do anything which she can sit and she can lay down even though she pretends she cant. She knows her name when its convenient for her but if shes busy forget it |
I agree with others who have said she's probably just too young still. You can try a technique called "loading" to see if it helps. Sit in front of her with some treats. Call her name- "Zoi". If she looks at you, give her the treat. Keep repeating this until every time you say it, she looks for the treat. Once you are at that point, you can start moving away from her a little and waiting for her to look away before calling her. If she looks at you, treat her again. She'll learn the sound of her name means good things quickly. |

You mentioned the potential of having to change her name, sounds like you don't want to, what about adding a "pet name" for lack of a better term, like baby, or sweetie, or something.. like Baby Zoi, then it wont sound as much like no... we call Harley so many nicknames I'm amazed he still knows his name... but we always throw a Harley in the midst... And a lot of people think that adding baby or something is foolish, cause they wont be little for ever... to that I say they will always be our babies no matter how old they are. |

She is young and she just doesn't care.. Use her name only for positive things. While petting her or giving treats. When scolding, use "Hey" or "No". Yorkies are also very stubborn and they have selective hearing. So just be patient. \ |
