Teacup puppies. I found this page on a rescue website and thought it had some very good information for anyone who is looking to buy a pup and is sucked into the whole "tiny pups are the cutest" thing. The sad truth about "teacup dogs" I find the last story about the Brussels Griffon heart-breaking. Please add your comments and any more information you have on these bad breeders who try to breed the smallest pup they can, then hopefully someone may read this on there search for a pup. |
According to everyone I walk by when I walk Harley I have a "teacup". THIS DRIVES ME ABSOLUTELY NUTTS! Some days I think to myself "if somoene else comments that my properly bred Yorkie is a teacup I'm going to hurl." Like this article says, teacups don't exist. Harley is 9 months old 3lbs maybe even 3.5lbs. It's not because his mom was tiny, nor his dad. It's not because some crazy breeder decided to play genetics, and he wasn't even a runt in his litter (however his 3 brothers and sisters have surpassed him). He is just a hyper well exercised, well managed small bonned dog. He may hit 4lbs, I don't know. I really wish some people would educate the public. it seems like many dog people know this phenomon exists, we know to avoid it... I'd love to see this article posted in the news, or somewhere to teach people, that just like puppy mills, this is a horrible thing... |
I know the feeling, my Poppy is 1 pound and she will be 11 weeks old on Friday.. Most people where I live have much bigger yorkies. Her mom and dad wernt tiny but she was the runt of the litter. Its the people who purposely breed for tiny dogs that gets my back up! Sometimes you just get a small dog but never should they be bred.. that just leads to heartache :( |
My dogs mom was 4.5lbs and she even had trouble giving birth (4 puppies somehow... seems like a lot). She needed a C-section, and the breeder rehomed her immediately after she recovered. it wasn't worth hurting the dog for to breed her again (it was her first and only litter).... I now know that is an extra quality I'll be looking for if I ever need to go with a different breeder. |
People should want a certain dog because they love the breed and not because they are small and cute. If they want a dog becuase they are small and cute and dont bother to do any research then no wonder they end up buying and supporting bad breeders.... sadly there are to many people around like this. Not educated right on the breed they are wanting to buy. It is so important to find out as much information about a breed before buying a puppy. If they did research on yorkies they would see that there is no such thing as a ''teacup'' and stay clear of people advitising them. Thanks for this post Rachel. I hope someone looking for a puppy does research and see's this post before they go and buy a ''teacup''. <3 xxxx |
Good post. I've added 2 tags to the bottom of the post, so that this page will come up if anyone is searching the interwebs for teacups. If someone wants to add some more tags (like "teacup yorkie" or "teacup puppies," do so, because it limited me to adding only 2 tags. |

Good post. I wish more people will see this so unethical breeders can stop scamming. |
Can admin or one of the mods sticky that link in the library? It's a great resource. |
Thanks everyone and thanks OwnedByJezebell for the tags, hopefully it will help someone out in there search. |
