Taking pup on Airplane So I just booked a ticket for my baby to come with me home on the 20th of this month. Im kinda freaking out because this will be the first time for me. I want to make sure I have everything I need for him (paper wise, records) whatever to get on. Is there anything you would suggest I would bring?? They said something like health records 13 days from departure??n Also I have a gym bag look alike thing for my baby with holes in it...its made for small dogs. Would that be ok to bring him in it?? Please let me know.. |
Who told you you need a health certificate? If he is flying in the cabin with you, you don't need any paperwork, though I recommend keeping a copy of shot records with you just in case. If a health certificate is needed, it has to be dated within 10 days of your departure from your vet. The bag you have sounds just fine. I would recommend having a lightweight blanket in case it is cold on the plane. Also have pee pads on hand - they are great for using in airport bathrooms. Make sure he has ID on him during your travels. Most airports will not let a dog on a leash in the airport, but a leash is definitely recommended as well. Good luck on your trip! |
Thinking back to my last flight :) .... baby wipes, nutrical, blanket, pee pads, poop bags, water bowl, buy bottled water at airport, and chew toy. Depending on the flight crew and those around you, you may be able to keep your baby on your lap. I had a very long trip back home with one of my pups (3 flights - 12 hour total travel time) and on all three flight the stewardess overlooked the fact that my little boy was on my lap. :) Luckily, he was quiet too. Everyone around me was also very pet friendly too. :) |
Actually, some airlines DO require a health certificate for travel! There are special forms that the vets need to complete. I am not sure which airlines, but know that some do! |
I travel will bella and they didnt ask for any paper. I just payed 100 for travelling in the cabin. When you pass through security they make you take your dog out and carry him though the gate while the bag goes though the scan, then you put your dog back on the carrier. It will be fine! bella barked aliitle bit when she was in the airplane but nothing crazy and she didnt like to be there for that long but she had to stay there. It will be fine! dont worry, its easier than you think! Good luck! Dont give him to much water a couple hours before the airplane so he doesnt pee there |
With the nutrical, do they make travel sized bottles or did you fill up an appropriately sized bottle with the nutrical? I'm just taking notes here for future endeavors :D |
You can check your airline's website and it'll have all the info and requirements as far as whether or not they require a health cert. You might have to hunt a bit for it but I've checked every one of the major carriers at one time or another and they all have the info. Most don't require a health cert but there are a couple that do, usually no older than 30 days prior to travel. They'll also have the size specs for the carrier. Make sure you pack two or three potty pads in your carry on, especially if it's a longer flight and also for when you're in the terminal. Really easy to go into the bathroom on the plane or a handicapped or end stall in the restroom at the terminal if he needs a pit stop. For carriers, the size may vary a bit from airline to airline but they all require that it's ventilated on at least two sides and a waterproof bottom. I'd put a potty pad in the carrier under any blanket or pillow just in case of accidents. |
Thanks for all your replys. I am flying United Airlines and its only a 2 hour flight IF even that. Im coming from Tampa to VA. Its 125$ Each way!! Expensive but I just feel more comfortable bringing him then leaving him with someone. I always worry about him like a child. Is there anything I can do to make this trip as stress free as possible for him. I wanna information about this as possible because this is my first and I want to make it right. Thanks all :) |
Also when I called it in to let them know to add my pup to the flight they just told me I would pay when I got there??? Im like ok!! Maybe they will forget to charge me...:) that would be nice! |
Double check with them on that, you don't want to get there ready to go just for them to tell you there is no room on the flight for him...in that case you may have to check him as cargo :( It's always good to call again and get someone else to see if you get the same answer. |

i travel with Keoki all the time and I have always had to have a Health Certificate although they never check it. Also I would double check on paying for your animal when you get there- on Continental you have to pay beforehand because they only allow a certain number of dogs on the flight- Continental is i think $125 each way!!! Last time I was going to see if I could just buy him a seat it would have been cheaper- anyway Keoki loves traveling in his Sherpa Bag- it is airline approved and he can see whats going on- it also fits under the seat well. I forget which airline..either Delta or AirTran....they told me that I could take the two, BUT that when I got to the ticket counter to check in it would be up to the agent whether there was enough room for the two or not. I opted to drive instead. I was not about to make plans and run a risk of an overzealous airline employee stopping my trip. |
Check your airline websites for what they consider an approved travel bag. The last time I flew Delta, the flight crew wouldn't let someone on because the bag didn't meet it's guidelines. |
