Good reference books 'Yorkshire Terriers for dummies' 'Housetraining for dummies' Good reference website Yorkietalk Welcome and congratulations! |
Congratulations. Just remember they need time to adjust to their new home and lots of rest between play time. Make sure the puppy is eating often and read up on the signs of and prevention of hypoglycemia (low sugar). Other than that enjoy!!! |
Oh very true on the Hypoglycemia ... make sure to get some nutrical! |
thanks everyone but STUPID ME!! haha i sould have prob added in my first post that his name is Logan and hes 1 1/2 years old, 6 pounds (is that a good weight?) and his owner said hes potty and crate trained but im sure i will still be picking up messes. haha I really want to talk him to puppy classes but is he too old? and do yorkies need to go to the groomers? I know they have the amazing beautiful long coast but can I keep it short doing it myself at home? or should i like take him to a groomers or petsmart? and how are they to train? i really want him to learn tricks haha Thanks everyone!!!! |
Congrats and welcome to YT. 6 lbs is a perfect weight. It's never too late to take a dog for obedience lessons. I loved Petsmart's because it was all about positive reinforcement. I saw on the training thread that he has issues with food aggression, and that is something they can give you tips on. The coat can be long, short or any where in between. It's all about your preferences and how much time you are willing to put in to it. As for how smart and tricks- personally, I think they are very smart. But with that comes a wee bit of stubbornness. Short sessions, several times a day and keeping it fun for them will help. Enjoy the new addition to your family. |

I'm a big time do it your self mommy. I took Kaji to Petsmart once for a nail trim, and I did not like how they treated him. Granted, that every employee at any place has their own attitude, but Kaji was just so frightened. I cut his hair myself, trim his nails and brush his teeth too, taught him tricks myself, and am doing all obedience training myself. It's not that hard as long as you are determined and disciplined to do it. I'm guessing from your age, you still have a month to work with him before going back to school. That's plenty of time to set up a good routine! A schedule is super important for these little ones. It helps them adjust better. As far as weight goes, as long as his body structure can handle the weight (as in he's not pudgy) there's nothing wrong with the weight. Make sure to get Logan in for a vet check ASAP for a wellness check. The vet can tell you if 6lbs is an appropriate weight for his size. How exciting! Post pics as soon as you can. |
