Where should Bentley sleep now?? ok so first we had Bentley sleeping in a crate as a puppy, but he pooped in his crate every single night. So after about 3 weeks of trying to crate train him and failing we just moved him to the bathroom with a wooden gate. He loved it in there, he could move around and pee and poop all he wanted :). But now, my 4 month old yorkie is 9LBS!!!! therefore he can climb over our 1.5ft gate. I dont want to just close the bathroom door because he is scratching it, and we already had to buy a bitter spray to put on the base boards in there because he was chewing them. so, now I am at a loss for options. My husband says to just keep him outside but that is not an option for me due to neighborhood cats that run in our backyard and how small and young he is. I dont know what to do or where to put him at night now..... any ideas? |
What about a higher gate in the bathroom? Years ago, my dad converted a kitchen door in to a dutch door to keep our dogs in there. Both parts could be closed off as needed or the top could remain open so the dogs could hear what was going on. |

With the crate it needed to be small enough that he wouldn't want to poo/pee in it. You can reintroduce him back to a smaller crate a little bit later on In my opinion Yorkies are Not built to be a "farm" dog and live outside. They have neither the coat nor the temperament. I think you know this but just to re-inforce what you do already know. Yorkies can be difficult to housetrain, it is why you and hubby need to be so consistent on where you want him to potty, and do your best to make sure he goes potty in that spot. |
Can you get a higher gate for the bathroom? Or, how about a play pen and placing it in your family room or living room? |
I would do that half door but its a bathroom =[. The kitchen would be our next idea but its a galley kitchen. Then of course we could do a large pen but those are rather unsightly. He is pretty well potty trained when he is out of the bathroom, we have him trained to go outside, when he has to go he will sit by the sliding glass door and if we dont see him he will bark until we let him out to go. He is pretty smart already for his age =]. I really love the idea of a dutch door those are adorable, but its difficult to do that to a bathroom, its less attractive there and rather pointless for the guests (it is a guest bathroom and we have gusts quite often). Can yall see the dilemma Im in? hahaha |
I have the white metal baby gates that swing open. The bars go vertical so they have nothing to grip on to climb out. They r 80.00 @ petsmart, but thought I saw them cheaper @ toys r us. |
I agree that yorkies aren't meant to live and sleep outside. Lucy sleeps in my bed and has never had a nighttime accident! Could she sleep at the foot of your bed? |

I will look into getting a bigger gate, the one he has now has vertical bars to but he is like indiana jones haha, he leaps on it and kicks his legs until he can get some traction lol. The bed idea, Hubby wont allow it haha. we already hog a queen bed as is, and a 10lb dog in between us would be horrible lol. The pen is also a good idea, it can be taken down so maybe I will look into that to. Or maybe even perhaps a doggy door? BTW- am i the only person who thinks it is hilarious to blow on your dogs face and watch them try to bite the air??? |

Cats or no cats - they're too small and don't do well in the elements plus you'll end up with more issues than you already have. He'd be miserable and you don't want that.... not to mention - the serious problems he may end up having if left alone with no human contact or even worse....you could lose him if something happened and you were't right there. Yorkies are totally human oriented. If things are as bad as you say (keep reading and posting !) and you find no way out and your husband is still set on leaving him outside - the best thing for him would be rehoming. Many people will take in untrained yorkies - anything is better than putting one outside. Some big breeds love it outdoors - but that's not the case with small breeds -especially yorkies. I'd suggest an ex-pen but you'd have to find something he can't 'jump' over and that can be tricky but it's been done !! lots of people have had similar issues so hopefully they'll see this post and you'll get more suggestions (I've never had to block my girls off from me even as puppies so I'm just offering help from what I've read in the past) I don't want to sound harsh but I'd def talk to your husband and if he has questions or doesn't believe this - have him come here to read the replies. I know others will say the same thing. EDITED TO ADD - just saw the other replies - I'm leaving for work and didn't read all - sorry ! Didn't mean to repeat others - but again - no outside for him !! |

Also one thing to point out to your husband, about the outside thing, Yorkies are popular to be stolen. I thought this didn't happen in rural areas, but I heard somone's yorkie just got stolen last weekend off thier own property, it was only an hour away from where I grew up (a very rural and friendly town, where most people don't lock thier doors). Also as others have stated, these guys are not meant to be outdoor dogs. |
