Boy yorkie question My breeder is trying to get me to take the brother of the little girl I'm buying from her. SHe's giving me a discount so they can stay together. I don't mind having two, I'm just concerned about boy behavior. Do they mark their territory? She has little harnesses she makes for her dogs and the boys harnesses cover their privates cause she says they dribble. This concerns me. I will have him fixed. Does that help? |

I've heard fixing male dogs around 6 months of age will help reduce marking their territory. But I think training plays a big part too. Just so you know, female can mark their territory too. |
Not all boys mark all over the place...I haven't had any issues with marking and Rizzo is 7.5 months old right now and still intact. If nothing else get one of those belts for him while he is learning, and get him fixed before the behavior starts and you shouldn't have an issue. Good luck, one yorkie puppy is a lot of time and energy, but I bet 2 puppies at once is super exhausting but at the same time super rewarding! :aimeeyork:):aimeeyork |
I don't know about the boy part but I do know that Ziva would love to have one of her littermates with her- sometimes she is so lonely and getting the big(old) dog to play is just frustrating. The 4 puppies had played so well together,it would use up a lot of her excess energy. |
Keegan is almost 9 and I've had zero problem with marking. Clarence (RIP) was 12 when we lost him and, again, zero marking. |
Troy is 1 and he has'n't started marking behavior. He doesn't dribble and he's affectionate, playful, good with kids and just an awesome all around dog. Troy never humped. Neutering is good to stop such behaviors so you'll be fine. |
I have one of each and my boy is a bigger suck then my female. He is very cuddly and a big mamas boy!! He doesn't mark and hardly ever lifts his leg. He was fixed around 11 months. |
I have littermates... My boy and girl puppies are 16 weeks old and they are littermates. I've only had them for two weeks. They are very sweet and good natured, they love to play and then they cuddle up and go to sleep. However, sometimes I do have to wonder what I've gotten myself into. It is a lot of work to housebreak and train 2 at the same time. You have to figure, housebreaking x 2, chewing issues x 2, vet visits x 2, etc. Also, since they have each other I sometimes wonder if we humans are just kind of superfluous because they don't act like they "need" us as much as a single puppy might. Again, I've only had them for two weeks so maybe it just takes longer for them to bond with their humans since they have each other. If you do decide to get them both just make sure you are prepared and committed to the idea. Hope that helps! |
I think it would be a good idea to get the little boy at the same time. I have a female and got the male 6 weeks later. It was harder to potty train because of the different ages. We later added another male(brother of the 1st male) so started potty training again. The boys always pee outside or on the pads, they have never marked. They were both neutered at 6 months. Good Luck |
I have a girl that's 4 yrs old and a boy that's 3 yrs old. We've had them both since they were pups. Both were spay/neutered by the age of 7 months old. My boy does not mark in the house. My girl has marked on a couple of throw rugs. Both will mark when they take a walk or go to the park. :D |
thanks so much for your advice everybody. This is such a great resource!!! |
Yep... My little Bazinga is 13 weeks and he marks his territory a bit too. He's doing good...he knows when he has to poop & goes to his puppy pad to do so, but his little pees around the house are a little frustrating. I hope he stops when we get him fixed. Maybe I'll try a belly band....anyone had any luck w/ belly bands??? |
chester was fixed at 6 months and he will mark outside but not inside, he has peed on the inside but just that not marking and he does not dribble keep those hairs trimmed and he is very cuddly, he is a mamas boy |
I have an almost 3 year old male- he does NOT mark- he uses wee wee pads and goes outside but I got him at 6 months old and neutered him a few weeks later. Males I think can be a bit harder to train but as long as you spend a lot of time with him he will be great!!! I will tell you that little boys love their mommys!!!! I guarantee you you will be happy you took both of them!!! Keep us posted !!!!! :) |
