BOY questions. Hey there, I'm still kinda new to the whole boy thing and I just wondered if i'm doing something wrong with him. I notice at times that he's really licking down there a lot. I try and stop him and train him not to, but he keeps doing that. When I got him he had pustular dermatitis on the prepuce. He had welts and sores on his manhood and we treated it with both antibiotics and tritop. Now i'm noticing that he's got dirty spots down there sometimes and his hair is kinda long and scraggly. I don't know what their areas are supposed to look like or be groomed like. should I do that pee string with his or cut all the hair off it? and are some bumps normal down there or does that mean he's infected? i can always take him into our vet for a check up anytime, but as for how to groom and care for him, i'm lost. what do little boys need us to do for them and what do they take care of themselves? |
I for one would hate the idea of Kaji giving me kisses after he was busy doing some self grooming. From day one, after every piddle, I would wipe Kaji down with puppy wipes. He knows it now so well. He goes pee pee and all I have to say is "Show me your belly" he flips over on his back, and waits to be cleaned. I don't know what the black spots are. I've seen other dogs with it but I don't know what they are or how to get rid of them. Kaji's belly skin is super white, which makes it easy for me to tell if he's irritated down there. His hair there is super fine and silky, nothing like the rest of his coat. I leave a pee string because he's so low to the ground, I'd hate that his manliness is exposed to germs and stuff when he's running outside in tall grass. I do trim it so it's not excessively long either. I've also noticed that the pee string helps him aim. I messed up once and cut it too short, he kept peeing on his front leg. He's just so use to having a pee string. I hope my rambling helps! |
Wow what a great answer! Cooper always pees on his front leg. Good tip. Is it normal for a dog to "clean" himself every time after he pees? I've been meaning to ask this. |
It is a good idea to keep the hair on the wee wee at least 1 inch long, it will help protect against dirt & bacteria and helps with the stream. {This depends on the size of the dog...some a bit longer, some a bit shorter} |
how do i get the groomers to make a pee string out of what's left until it grows into a good one? i've seen then on dogs at work, but not sure where to start him on it. do i just ask the groomer about it next time he goes in? |

As far as his licking himself......Yorkies are very clean little dogs and prone to licking. ......So, I don't know what you mean by a lot. Is it everytime he pees? If so they are cleaning the urine off as well as drying themselves. If he has little sores, I'd take him in. I know that my boys will get tiny lil insect bites from playing on the grass. When I see this I usually just wash them and apply panalog. |
he just seems to be licking all the time even when he hasn't just went potty. like before bed time last night he licked for like 10 minutes on his pee pee and what's left of his little sack. |

do you think allergies could play a role? he seems to have some issues with skin and allergies, i'm giving benedryl almost daily to help out. |
I would think that it brought him comfort and relief at some point so it feels good and soothing too him. I would bring him to the Vet because of the bumps just to make sure all is good though. If you are not wee wee pad or litter box training I would try to keep him in a baby onsie or t shirt that covers his pee pee while he is in the house this should break him of the habit. |

Rachel is it ok if I re-ask one of my own boy questions in your thread? |

Thanks! My thread kinda died, so I'll ask here. I re-checked Kaji's winky and it is scabby at the tip where I found some irritation a few days ago. It's in a straight line from the opening down a cm or two. Ann mentioned that it could be a vein, but it looks scabby. I don't know what it is or what I can put on it. I'd post a picture, but that might be borderline Yorkie porn. ;) |
do u have any tritop ointment? that might clear it up. |
Where can I get that? |

my brother said in shock "...really? Do you wipe his ass too?" So rude. :-l lol |

I'm just kidding. He's trimmed back there so I only wipe his booty if he has diarrhea. It gets pretty nasty back there when he's sick. :( |

I'm not laughing, and I'm not judging. You should see the looks I get from my male cousins for the little things I already do for Kaji. I'm crazy enough! :D |

I keep Gatsby very short down there. but apparently his legs are just far enough apart because he never pees on his legs. when he was a baby he would pee on his belly but when he got older he stopped and i also don't clean him except at night right before bed during nightly groom. wow now i feel like a bad mom.:( |
