Problem with taking my boy to work..... I've always taken him to work with me. Every morning I pack his crate, his bag and his bed and toys and take him with me. Last week became a problem. Every noise he heard, he'd start with this shrill bark. Every time the door opened, he took off barking at whoever was there, then down at their feet with his ears back. Before, he would just go into the front room when the door opened and want to be petted. Now he's like mini Cujo taking off. PLUS, he peed and pooped three times last week INSIDE within 10 minutes of taking him out. It's nice to see dog poo in the floor when you walk into a business establishment. I can't have that in our office and Wednesday and Thursday I left him at home in a larger crate. (He learned how to climb over the top of his mesh play pen). I feel like dirt about it but I can't have what few customers we have lately being put off by a barking dog. Any suggestions? **Edited to add*** he only seems to be this way since July 4th and the fireworks. Now even thunder sends him into a tizzy. Like right now, he just heard a doorbell on TV and he's barking like a nut. |
How old is cooper? This sure sounds like a sudden behaviour change. Is it possible to keep him at his xpen at work, that will give you some time to stop the barking without him running up to the customers. |
He's just turned 8 months. I don't have an x-pen, I just had the mesh playpen and he can get out of it. There's not a lot of room for something like that. Usually I put him in his travel crate when I have a customer but he was out of control last week. We have a shop area I could set up something like that in but it's TOO HOT!!!! |
We do travel a lot and he has to consider two places "home" but he's always seemed to adjust well. We spent the 4th in Tennessee in the Smokie Mountains and I could barely drag him outside after all the booms, and we didn't even go to any shows. He could just hear them in the distance. Not once have we gone back to the office and he doesn't seem comfortable there. He knows where he is and knows everyone there. This has been an odd change in him and I hate leaving him home. I find myself wondering how he's doing, even though I know he's fine. I do think the xpen idea is a great one, I just don't have room in that tiny office for it. |
Okay I just read about the thunder. 8mths old he's entered into another fear phase. Here is what you can do to help, plush puppy sells some "apprehension" it is quite good for dogs. How many pounds does he weigh? You can try a very small amount of vit B12 in his food too. What you can try is to get a soft sound bell. Or just wrap a bell in a towel to start with a muffled sound. go to another room. Call him to you with a big happy lilt in his voice, have a good really smelly treat out, give it to him for a great come, then ring bell softly see if he stays quiet if so treat again, lots of love and praise. Gradually as success is happening, you can increase the sound. |
Do you have a baby gate you can put in doorway? kind that you can swing door open? |
Ok, so it's a phase! That's great to know. :) No, actually a gate never even occured to me but I could absolutely do that at work. I'll look into the Apprehension too. Thank you Gemy. :) |

I remember my boss telling me I could bring my girls and I knew it wouldn't be a good idea - plus I had a job to do and really couldn't be distracted much as I'd have loved to have them with me All the best - he's still young so you do have a good chance of re-training so he goes back to his old self |
If I have to leave him at home I want a larger pen so that he can move around more than in a crate. I had something similar to this but he can get out of it: Pet Dog Cat Tent Puppy Playpen Exercise Play Pen Crate - eBay (item 260597733410 end time Aug-03-10 11:55:06 PDT) There are these also. This one is 48" high: It'z a Breeze Mesh Exercise DOG Portable 48" H Play Pen - eBay (item 350375945012 end time Aug-23-10 07:58:03 PDT) The one I have he jumps until he can get his front paws over the top then he pulls himself over the top. Do you think he could do that with one 4' tall? He weighs a little over 6 pounds. I'd like to try maybe half days with him at the office and see if I can stop the barking behavior. If not, then at least he'd have something suitable to left in for long periods of time. |
the first pen you showed actually had a mesh cover over the top dose yours have a mesh top ? if so how dose he climb out of it? if mot maybe your should consider that |
Mine doesn't have a top. That's not the exact one I have, just similar. I got mine at Petsmart for actually quite a bit more money than that one and when I folded it the first time one of the bottom wires poked through the bottom. I didn't actually read the info on that item, but that my work as well. I was looking quickly for an example because it seems every 5 minutes I'm logged out and I have to start over. Is that normal? To be logged out so often? |

I'd get the one with the mesh top. These rascals can be quite the climbers and an open top is an invitation to "heaven". Logged off a lot, maybe your connection is slow. I had dial up originally and was logged off a lot but when I got that fast speed it seemed to stop. I'm the absolutely last person though that really knows anything about this stuff.:( |
It's supposed to be "high speed" but it's far from it. I use a verizon wireless card when I'm here in Alabama but the area is so rural, I can't imagine anything being high speed. It's better than dial up though.....at times. :D |
