One Proud Mama Well, my little guy has figured the potty thing out. He has not had an accident in over a week! Originally he would just go to the door and sit not really letting you know. And if ya didn't do something he'd go. So, all those that have the same issue I say get a bell. I got one and it has worked like wonders. Within two weeks he was ringing it on his own to go out. It's been awesome! What a guy:D |
That is great! I'm considering getting a bell...even my DH thinks it's a good idea. Where did you get yours? How did you train your pup to use it? |
doggie bell I found mine at an offbeat independent pet store. Mine looks like jingle bells for santa. You probably could get one like hobbie lobby. About 4 bells are about an inch to 2 inches in diameter hung on a wide ribbon and snaps at sections to adjust length. Mine has two sections. You want it long enough to hang at the door so your dog can nudge it with its nose. Each time he sat at the door basically telling us he needed to go out, I would tap the bell and say outside or you wanna go outside and let him tap it too and then we go outside while praising him of course. He's so good now I think he tries to fake us out. He'll tap it and then sit there and not go out but I don't want him doing that. If he taps it he must go out even if its just to chase bugs. He's got it down good though. It's funny - for my Rosco a light tap means pee or root for worms:p and a big bang means a #2 (poopoop):D Didn't take him long to figure it out. They are smart dogs! |

I was so frustrated with Ziva about Christmas time (8 months old) I read about Poochie Bells and made some from Christmas bells and a piece of decorative cording from Pier one-cost $2! -Priceless! Ziva never uses the bells but I'm sure they taught her what I wanted and she learned to bark at the door (more like a discreet little "woof") |
I am celebrating along with you! My little "girl" has also finally figured out the potty training outside. I was worrying she would never get it! But I know better. I also know she is still very young.... only 5 months old. Two weeks she has been doing really well with potty training. I am just hoping once I have her spayed she will not revert back to not being trained. We have the potty training bells also. But, neither of my two puppies are understanding the concept yet. I have faith, they will soon learn to ring the bells to go outside for potty. |
That's great and so fast. You must be very happy.:bravo: |
We tried to use a bell for potty training and in my case it didn't work. I would ring the bell and say let's go potty and wait for her to ring the bell it would never happen. Pixie is almost 2 years old and is pretty much trained. The only problem I have is she'll poop in the house even though she has gone out side and does it in the morning but during the day she'll poop in the livingroom or in the evening in our family room. Hoever, she always lets us now when she has to pee. Any one have an ideals how I can control or stop this behavior. |
Congratulations on teaching your pup to use the bells, I was thinking of getting some for Poppy. She is on pads at the moment but I was thinking of teaching her to go outside in a week or so when shes had her last needle. I hope I have the sucess that you have had :) |
