General Advice and Loneliness Ok, I have raised dogs all my life, well not all but for about 15 years I raised, breed, and trained Catahoula's. I have been around large dogs all my life, all outside dogs. My fiance and I got a new Parti Yorkie, she was 3 months old when we purchased her and now she just turned 6months on July 15th. She is not a toy. I have never had much experience with smaller puppies here is my problem concern for her. When we first got her and she was left alone we kept her in a larger then needed kennel but I was no comfortable with that, now she stays in our bed room while we are at work. My fiance goes to work for 7 or 8 am and I get home for 1pm. The most she is alone for is 6 hours a day. She get so excited to see either of us when we get home I actually worry about her, she is so hyper, she runs circles around us and insists on being held, and still runs up the couch and around us when we sit down. She gets so excited she actually starts whining as almost as if hyperventilating, but not quite, just extremely excited and whining, I have never seen such emotion to that level, so here is the catch, while I can understand her excitement when we arrive home while she is alone, if I go to the store and leave her home, I have to walk in with the groceries to calm her before I can carry anything in. and the last few days when I get home from the gymn and take a shower, she is the same way when I get out the shower, she does not like being alone on any level for any amount of time, she is not bad when she is alone, I have a webcam monitoring our bedroom I can access from my phone, she looks around the room and smells for us, but is never bad, she is almost potty trained, very rarely has an accident, does not chew, is not overly hyper, and is not a barker, she loves attention, from anybody, even friends of mine that come over she has never met. I am just looking for advice, I know there may be nothing that I can do, but I feel bad for her, and the last two days she has been extremely attached and we are going on vacation for 4 days, she is staying with a friend who I trust, its almost as if she can sense we are leaving her. I apologize for the long run on statement, I just looking to the wisdom of other experienced yorkie owners. Thank you in advance. David and my baby Dutchess :-) |
Hi, welcome to YorkieTalk. I really think what you are describing is typical yorkie behavior. Yorkies love human contact. I have been raising yorkies for nearly 14 years and mine act the same way. Mine are not normally left alone except when I go grocery shopping and that is usually once a week but they all go crazy when I get home. I can just walk outside for a few minutes and when I come in you would think I had been gone for hours. Mine follow me everywhere in the house. It is just the nature of yorkies, some are very excitable. It sounds like your puppy has really bonded to you. Just make sure your friend gives her lots of love and attention and she will be just fine. I hope you enjoy your vacation. |
Awww. That is so sweet! I think most dogs at home alone are probably a little bit lonely during part of the day. That's just the way it is for most of us who have to work. You are home by 1:00 and that's pretty early ~ so she's not home all day by herself. If you are really worried about it; maybe consider finding a neighborhood friend who could let her out once before you get home at 1:00. At some point, I ended up getting two dogs; but my first dog was four years old by then. I think she will be fine while you are gone too - especially if your friend enjoys having her and gives her lots of attention. We would love to see pictures of your baby! |
Welcome to YT!! I know exactly what you mean, I work throughout the day so I go home everyday at noon to take him out and then I see him when I get off work....he is the SAME way! He will follow me everywhere (which I love hehe) and if I'm sitting on the couch on my laptop or something he will sit there and bark at me to play with him, bring me toys to throw or just jump and down wanting attention. He also runs around like crazy when I get home and I think its just because he's excited :) You are so lucky to have your pup so attached to you, means she just loves you that much :p |
Some Pics 4 Attachment(s) Thank you for quick repsonses and here are some pictures, from when we got her till yesterday and all in between |
4 Attachment(s) A few more, she so needed a hair cut when we got her. |
Both of mine get very excited when we come home from somewhere. They are home together while we are gone, so they have company. I think they are just really excited to see us! Pippin is still excited, but not as excited as he was when he was younger. Lyric just goes crazy. I think it's a normal reaction for them to show their excitement. |
Thanks for sharing pictures. She looks like a very sweet happy girl. You called her a parti yorkie but she appears to be marked more like a regular yorkie. Parti's normally have a large area of white on them. It sounds like she is a very social girl which is good. |
Aww great pics, what a sweetie!! :p |

Her coloring is one of the aspects my Fiance fell in love with the most, but is also one of the harder angles to get a photo of. Her white is from the starts under her mouth and extends to where the crease of her neck starts and then she turns black and then the lower portion of her chest is white and then goes back black, and then at the top of her front two legs right at the joint she is also white, she is getting a bath a bit later today, she probably could use a trim also, but I will see what I can do to photograph her colors and post them later today. She is on the todo list as well as pack and tidy up before I go on vacation, gotta clean my three fish tanks also. She is AKC registered, and I have a copy of her father's certified pedegree. Father - Parti Grandmother (Father's Side) - Parti Both Parent's of her Grandmother - Parti I am not that familiar with the yorkie breed and know a bit less about the parti gene, I have a general idea. It was not a deciding factor when purchasing her it just happened that way, the coloring and that she was a female and the breeder that I found her with. (that took alot of work) Thanks again all, Dave |
3 Attachment(s) Ok last bit of pics I promise, ha |
She's adorable! |
My Dolly is the same way, Especially running circles when I get home at 5. When there was a family emergency & I knew I wouldn't be home much my friend dogsat for a few days. He told me she waited for me to come back for a couple hours, but after that was so excited about all the new people and the different neighborhood that she stopped sitting ny the door. Of course it helped that he brought her everywhere with him & most of his family wanted to visit to see her. So she ended up getting more attention there! Basically what I'm trying to say is if you've found a good dogsitter who knows she needs extra attention she should be OK. Dolly still keeps hoping she can stay at her "uncle" sam's house when we go there because she knows she'll be extra spoiled! |
Hiya all, Just saying thanks again, just got home yesterday. She totally missed us, took a night to get back to her normal self, was happy to see us but was pissed with us, ha. She got a bath and is back to herself, laying here on the couch with daddy. |
My pup is the same way even though she is only left for 3-4 hours at the very most. There are a lot of toys which you put treats inside that will keep them occupied for a while, Im thinking of getting one because maybe it will take her mind off being alone :) |
