Major dew claw problem here! HELP!! So apparently Poppy has a dew claw on each of her back legs. She hasn't been groomed in a while and I didn't even know they were there until I just looked and saw that they are CURLED UP INTO HER SKIN! She won't let me touch them, she's hiding from me right now because I was trying to figure out if they're really up in the skin or not. Is this painful?!!! I mean it has to be since she got upset and ran away, right? What do I do?!!!! I've been putting off having her nails trimmed professionally because last time there was that black stuff that stops bleeding on every single nail and I do not trust anyone to not hit the quick, whereas I myself am too scared to hit it as well!!! I've been putting it off thinking it wouldn't hurt if I waited a little longer, let the nails grow out and found a good groomer who will NOT just hack at her nails and not hit the quick. I asked some friends if they could recommend a GOOD groomer in my area and I'm waiting to hear back. I'm taking her Saturday, is this a huge problem? I'm soooo scared right now! (furthermore, why would someone remove the front ones and leave the back ones?)! |
You might consider her taking her to your vet to get her nails looked at. If the nail is growing into the skin it needs to be taken care of right away. Often the vet techs will cut the nails too without you having to pay for a vet visit. As for cutting the quick, sometimes no matter how careful we are it just happens but it shouldn't happen with every nail. I know some groomers will purposely cut them short and quick them but I think that is wrong. The dewclaws are bad about really curling so I would just about bet that they are not in her skin but just curled back. Rear dewclaws are pretty uncommon in yorkies and they should have been removed but some breeders don't remove dewclaws. |

Oh I am PRAYING they are just curled and aren't actually grown into her skin. She gets mad at me everytime I try to touch them and runs away. Thank you. |
Yes, I agree with bjh, I'd take her to the vet to have them checked out. Some people have them removed during spaying/neutering if the breeder didn't do it. The nail needs to be trimmed and some people have reported having the nail snag on something and the dewclaw rips off, which is extremely painful for the dog. This is something your breeder should have advised you on. |
I would probably take her to the vet as well. They can look at it to be sure it isn't curled into her skin (which could probably cause infection). And then they could trim them for you. If she's not allowing you to touch them, it sounds like they hurt her...so better safe than sorry IMO. |
I agree take her to your vet. I always let one of the vet tech's at my vet cut Jada and Bogie's nails. If she does have a problem with them being grown in, at least she will be at the vet office where they know what they are doing. I don't think I would want a groomer doing it, especially since she is acting like it bothers her. |
The only problem with the vet plan is I take her to Petsmart, as she's been on their "puppy plan" since I got her. I kind of do not trust the vet techs there. The vets are good for shots and when she had to be fixed but generally they aren't very helpful and try to hock you all of their products. (and actually charge you to clean their ears, which is something I've never seen a vet do) Should I give it a shot with them or just find a new vet right away? I was going to get a new vet when her puppy plan ran out in a couple of months but this is definitely accelerating the process. |
Okay good news, my aunt just gave me the information on her vet she's been using for years with excellent reviews, and her dog has had a myriad of health problems, unfortunately...so she trusts them with her dog's life. I'm scheduling an office visit when they get back from lunch. I'll just explain the situation and hopefully once they check the dew claws, I can get one of the techs to trim her nails (office visits are really pricey, but according to my aunt, worth it). |
don't let the nails get long I have been told if you let the nails grow long the quick gets farther down in the nail. So if you let them get long you are going to get the quick just to get them back to a reasonably shorter length. That's probably why they all bled the last time they were done. It is sort of a self fulfilling problem. |

Goodness really? I just can't let her go through that again, I'd rather her nails be long, but not dangerously so. (also the last time she had her nails trimmed, she was not "overdue" for a grooming (like her nails weren't that long at all), we had her on a pretty good schedule and then after that grooming experience, I was a little traumatized seeing her come home a little traumatized and have been putting it off) I got that file thing that spins (you know the one, it's all over tv) and tried it on her and she was NOT having it....and it actually SPLIT the nails of one of my cats so bad it bled, I felt AWFUL!! BAD PRODUCT. I wish I could pop her a pain pill before she has to have her nails done. My poor baby!!!!!! It's like watching a child go through pain...does anyone know how severe the pain is when it hits the quick? How would that equate to pain for us? UGH, just awful.:( |

I'm sure the nail is not grown into the skin and just curled up. Don't stress yourself about getting her nail trimmed. It's just something that needs to be done and some dogs need it done more often. It's too bad you didn't notice while she was spayed they could have removed them then. I had Bogey and Dbugs dew claws removed during their neuter and they did fine. |
