Hawks - need some info A hawk flew into a tree behind my house on Sunday evening around dusk. :mad: He came back the next morning. We have not seen him since, but I am very scared to let my little trio out in the garden. If anyone has any advice on how I can deter this monster from living near by, please let me know. I've been told I need to decorate my yard with old CDs and aluminum foil and make sequence outfits for my babies. :eek: If anyone has done any of these or other suggestions, please let me know. Even though Mr. Hawk :mad: has not been back, he looks like a small airplane when he flies. My dogs :aimeeyork:aimeeyork:aimeeyork will probably run over to him wagging their little tails. Especially Teddy :aimeeyork, he just won't get it. Thanks in advance!! |
I heard if you feed the hawk pineapple. Oh wait~that is for poop eating puppies. :D I'm sorry I just had to say it. ;) In all seriousness, all the things that you mentioned are what I have heard will help to deter my jet plane size hawk from hanging out in your yard. I don't even think a hawk has a natural predator to use as a deterrent. I just tried to Google search too. I still vote for the CD's in the trees and sequin outfits would work the best. You might just need to make him want to move on for a few days he will find a new place to hang out. The one that was hanging out in my yard eventually let after giving me several heart attacks a few weeks ago. :rolleyes: |
Last year I had Bentley outside in the fenced in yard and I nearly had a heart attack trying to get him back inside when I saw this huge hawk circling. I think someone called them a turkey hawk or something like that...it was huge!! I don't think even if we are out there with our little ones it will deter these birds from gliding in and taking one. I have no idea how to distract them. |
Google 'repel hawks'. Have read they don't like bright colors and shiney objects. |
I just thought of something! Do your neighbors have bird feeders in their yards? That might be attracting the hawk to your yard since the small birds would be the hawks prey. |
CD's in the trees hanging with fish line or something strong so they can blow in the wind. Did this for my chickens and I haven't lost a chicken after I put it up.:D We have eagles here too and I don't like them circling the house. Time to go in when we see them. Celeste |
Hawks We have the hawks too. The regular ones and ones that are big and black. They normally go for dead animals and small rodents. I see the regular hawks perched around my yard (fence, pool deck, etc.) with either a snack, frog, lizzard, etc.). The big black ones on the other hand tried to get my oldest when she was a baby. I had her in a puppy pen outside while I was washing the deck and he just swooped down and I had to spray him with a water hose to get him to leave. Even the vet warned me when I first took her to the vet. I don't think we can't deter them from flying around, but I do watch my babies all the time outside. And yes, they do look like an airplane shadow when they fly over. Let me know if you find a good solution. |
I have a big fear of hawks too! I'll be watching to see what others suggest... |

I have the same problem as well as owls swooping over my yard. I don't let my baby out at all after dusk. They are waiting in trees and on rooftops. One owl did get my cat. I am building an inside potty for my yorkie. Hopefully she will use it. Right now I am looking for good quality artificial turf. Anyone know where I can get a small quantity? 10% coupon - lovemypup |
It got to where I couldn't go out in my backyard w/o two hawks circling, and one time, diving, for my babies!...I finally had the fence guy come and string twine every 18" across my whole back yard (62x70)...He put a nail on about every 4th board of the 6 1/2' wood fence...Above the patio door, and storage room door, he raised the strings, just under the roof, so everyone could walk in and out of doors... |
