Very strange potty training setback...any ideas? Rocco is 7 months and has had no accidents in the house for months. Now that he's doing so well, he has recently had more free access to the house, including the hallway area of my ranch which has a bathroom and bedrooms off of it. This week, he has peed 3 times in the bathroom, right in front of the toilet!! Then yesterday, my teenaged daughter told me she heard him barking and found him in the bathroom, barking at the toilet!!??? She took him out to potty within about 15 minutes of that (he was at the back door); she didn't think that maybe he was 'asking' to go when barking at the toilet (which is what I thought when she told me about it). Any ideas on how to stop this before it becomes a regular habit? Has anyone else had this problem? |
Maybe he can smell pee coming from the toilet? Even though it has been flushed dogs have a better sense of smell and may still be able to smell pee so he may be marking where he smells? Im not sure just an idea :) I would keep the bathroom door closed. |
Yeah my Oliver LOVES to piddle in the bathroom for some reason so I always have to leave the bathroom door closed. He usually comes with me to the bathroom haha but I think he's learning not to go in there, potty training is so fun isn't it?! :p |

I think you just need to monitor him closely around the bathroom until he understands it's a people-only potty. Make sure the toilet and the area around it is cleaned really well, with an enzyme cleaner. He sounds like a smart doggie! |
My booboo also goes in the bathroom if I don't let him out on time but he doesn't let me know I figure it out when I walk in barefoot and step in it.... |
As weird as this may sound...do you have any men living in the house that might "miss" when they use the toilet. If he smells the pee he might be marking some territory. I know that we had that problem when my little nephew was here. Just like if Boo smells another dog's pee in the yard he has to go on top of it, and when we go out he follows my lab around waiting for her to go so he can cover up her scent. |
Thanks for the feedback! Sorry, I just got to check these responses today. The bathroom floor is tile, no rugs at all. As far as him getting the scent of pee, maybe. But I don't know if I could possibly keep the bathroom any cleaner (the first time he peed I cleaned with enzyme cleaner AND bleach). I guess he just thinks that since we 'go potty' in there, he should too :p. Oh well, just one more little challenge in figuring out my silly little furbutt!! |
