Grey Hair? My 1 year old male yorkshire terrier has a lot of grey roots on the top of his head. When will his hair grow silky and more like an adult Yorkshire terrier's coat? |
Yorkies break color at different times and yours may just be breaking later - they can break up to 3 years of age and then some never do. It depends on the type of texture his coat is. How is his coat texture on his back and sides? It would be nice to have a photo to go by, even though it is difficult to tell texture from a photo and would only be a guess. Some yorkies are not silky and have a wooly or a cotton or even terrier coat. |
My Avatar is a picture of him as he looks now |
Okay - I took a look at your album and it looks like he has a cottony/soft coat. He may break or may not. With this coat it all depends. He may break, but looks like it will be later. |
He has a puppy cut with a faint black back, grey head, ginger legs and belly. He is really fluffy and still looks like a puppy; everyone who sees him ask if he is a puppy. We tell them he's a year, and they get really surprised. |
Thanks for your advice :) |

Thanks he is a very special dog. It surprises me he won't have a silky coat though, considering both his parents were show dogs. |
Joey's head started getting grey roots around 14 weeks and by 11 months his head was silver, but it turned beige literally what seemed overnight. One day when I was drying his hair I notice it was no longer silver. The beige turned to tan/gold. His saddle is what's called a dark blue, it looks black if cut really short, but as it grows it's the black hair has a metallic type of shine to it, and this is referred to as gun metal, I think. I've read that if they have silver heads when they are young they will have a silk coat, I don't know if this is true though, but it worked out for Joey. Your little boy is adorable! |
Thank you. I am really upset though, because he just had to get surgery due to a leg problem. He is having a though time. My poor baby may not ever use the leg again, even with the surgery. :( |

Are his parents champions?? Back in the 80s there were quite a few yorkies that were champions with thicker coats. Sometimes this creeps back in to some lines. Yorkies are so hard to determine which pups will make show or not, especially due to coats - this is why we have to wait so long and hold on to our babies so long to see how they develope. Soft coated yorkies can also be grey in the head and then clear later - I have one. I will see if I can find a photo of him. Again - with yorkies coats it is hard for us to make guarantee pretictions, so we can only guess with pups till they mature. Since he is still only 1 you have a better guess now, but still will have to wait and see how he actually develops. |

Don't worry about his coat - clearing tan or texture. If he is a pet and not going to be shown, he is so cute, and his coat/color does not really matter. I have a three legged cat that as a kitten got up into the car hood and we did not know it. She had torn muscles and would never be able to use it again. She gets a long great and even can climb trees. My best wishes to your baby and sending prayers he feels better soon. |

Yes, my pet that is neutered - we got him when the kids were younger as their pet. He was grey on the head for the longest time and break tan. No reflection to the tan, but he did clear. He does have a bit of grey, darker hairs along his head fall infront of his ears. My compter crashed a few days ago and now have a new one. I saved some photos of my stoarge thing, but did not have any photos of Micky saved on it. I will search for his real photos and send them. He is an old guy now, but never less spoiled nor less loved. He is a cutie and still looks like a puppy. We keep him clipped down too. So much easier for a boy. |
