Yorkie Newbie with question Hi everyone My name is Tim i just recently purchased a 1 year old Yorkie from another family about a month ago. His name is Max. anyways onto my question, I have been baithing him weekly due to a small flea infestation he has managed to come up with. My concern is he smells like dog really bad, even only 12 hours after i wash him. Id like to know if this is a normal condition, or if there might be something wrong with him, or if im doing something wrong. |
I'm not sure if it means something is wrong, You should ask your vet or dog groomer. You can get a spray for your dog to battle bad odour, It should be in your local pet store :) |
thanks for the quick reply! as soon as i win the battle with the fleas he is going in to get his manhood removed haha, so ill adress this concern with the vet then as well. |

Some things to check; Sniff his ears - there should be no bad smell coming from ears - if so - something wrong Open mouth look, at gums and teeth and sniff mouth - no bad scent - no obvious gum discoloration, teeth should be white, particularly at one year old. Check skin on belly and under loins - look for sores, redness, discoloration and again no bad scent should be smelt. Check eyes for clarity of whites, tearing, styes, sores etc Check anus - trim hair around there so that this area stays clean. Hope this helps |
thanks alot ill do all that stuff. he does have bad breath buut his gums look healthy and his teeth are pearly white. he does have some eye boogers occassionally but i imagine thats normal. only thing i do notice is his hind legs on the inside where the soft skin is near his belly look red, but i have always attributed that to flea bites and scratching |

Welcome to YT Tim!! Good luck with your new baby!!! :D |
the first couple washes i was using hartz flea and tick, but then i learned that alot of people have complications with some of hartz products so i stopped using it, and moved to a regular shampoo for people. im not using conditioner though, should i be doing that? |

Hi. Hi! Have you taken him to the vet for a check up? It is good idea to do that when you get a dog. Fleas often bring parasites with them, so I would bring a stool sample to your vet. Your vet can also give you some topical drops for the fleas, something like the product "revolution". These drops can be applied once a month as a flea preventative if you find you have a reoccuring flea problem. As for his "dog smell", it could be a minor issue with his anal glands. The vet will be able to empty them. Good luck and keep us posted! Congrats on your new dog! |
i guess i should start by trimming his hair around there! |
I would use conditioner no matter what length the coat is, if you find you are bathing once a week. It is possible that Max's skin could get a bit dry and the conditioner would be good for his skin. |
