Would like opinions please I have an 8 month old yorkie named Harley. He is doing wonderfully well. We have him in intermediate dog training and he's totally house trained. My husband, who has never bonded with any of my dogs before has really fallen hard for this little guy. My problem is, I want to get another puppy for Harley to play with. He loves all the dogs in his class and they get to socialize after class. I think he needs that socialization with other dogs. Well DH won't even hear of it. Now I have a chance to get a 2 year old yorkiepoo from an acquaintance. I have gone to meet him and fell in love. He is already housebroken. I took him for a walk even though he had never had a leash attached to his harness. He did great. By the time I left him, I was sitting on the floor with him in my lap licking the sweat off my neck! (I allowed him to climb onto me) My husband was present and saw what a great dog he is. I can get him for some daytime visits first. Then if everything goes well I'll bring him home. If it doesn't work out she has agreed to take him back. Sounds like a win win situation to me. That baby needs rescuing, He needs grooming and he has fleas. She has 2 other dogs and they are not being taken care of properly. My son is grown, my DH works and I work part time. At this stage in my life I feel I should be able to do and have what I want for a change.:mad::mad: Just would like some opinions and people to relate their experiences, good and bad are welcomed. Thanks for listening. |
I'm sorry your husband feels that way. Has he said why? Perhaps he thinks he has a good thing going with Harley and doesn't want to upset the apple cart. It would be nice for Harley - if the two get along - to have another lil guy to keep him company when everyone is gone. Then he won't be so lonely.:) |
The other doggie sounds just wonderful :)! And plus, you would be rescuing him and giving him a better life. I hope you can get him :). What did your husband say when he saw the little fella? Did he feel positive about the experience? I wonder if your hubby is worried that if you get another dog - Harley will become more attached to the other dog, rather than to him (hubby). And in my experience, that doesn't happen. There is just a different relationship btwn me and the dogs vs. the dogs and the dogs. Maybe explore that a little with him? |
Awwww sorry you have this diemma. No one can tell you how to handle your husband. But I would ask him why he doesn't want another one since it is obviously you that will be doing all the work. I think two dogs are great, I will ever have just one. They are such great company for each other. But when it is lap time, they are always right there. They still prefer the, people, but are not as needy because they have each other. I hope that you can talk him into it. |
Talk to your hubby and let him explain why he doesn't want a second dog. He must have good reasons. But in my opinion you both have to be on the same side. It will be very stressful if you get this dog and hubby is totally against it. I sure hope you can figure it out so the little one gets all the love he deserves. |
That's exactly what I've been thinking. He's so gaga over Harley. I think he's afraid Harley may want to play with Sam instead of him. Harley may want to sleep curled next to Sam rather than my hubby's lap. He is also afraid they may not get along. I've just got to wait and see. |
I say talk with him calmly. If he can't agree then don't get doggie, you need united front to raise loving happy pup! |
I get to see Sam today for a short visit. My plan is to have a few play dates and see how it goes. If hubby still says no then I guess it will be no. The thing is, he didn't want Harley. He gave in grudgingly and now he is ga ga over him. We'll work it out. I just wondered if any one else has had this problem. Thanks for all of your responses. I'm glad to know that there are people that care. I'll keep on posting. |
I hope everything works out the best for you hubby and Harley. Just a caution if the new dog has fleas make sure Harley has flea protection prior to them playing together. |
My hubby is the same way! He only agreed to the dane because he has always wanted one. Then I wanted a lap dog and he only agreed to Piper to make me a happy woman. Well, he loves them both! Him and Lucy play at night and he even loves on Piper (when I am not looking). Now, I want to get one more small lap dog. I love the Parti Yorkie's. I found one (on here!) and am scared to ask hubby about him! We can financially afford another one, we have the time to spend with another, and I am the one who is home with them 90% of the time. It is that pesky 10% that makes me feel guilty for bringing animals home. :( |
