Head shaking... a little too much!! Help! Thunder is shaking his head non-stop. He has floppy ears, but I just got him groomed a few days ago, and they took out all the hair in his ears.... I don't know whats wrong. He scratches a bit, but nothing abnormal. He's shaking like something's in there!!! Could it be that the hair is already growing back and its bugging him? I don't want to take him to the vet for that...but I'm afraid he'll rattle his brain a little too much!! Any suggestions?? |

You might want to have the vet check him out. Ear mites or an ear infection could be the problem. I do know my last yorkie was scratching at his ear and then his hair around the ear starting falling out. I took him to the vet and $200.00 later they found nothing. I found out from the lady at the pet store that it might be a food allergy ( corn). I switched food and problem was solved. But a vet could rule out the obvious problems. :) |
I agree...sounds like an ear infection to me. Fold back and ear and see what it looks like in there. The skin should be baby pink (almost white). If it's more of a magenta color or red than that is definitely the problem and you should take him to the vet. If the skin looks normal then try cleaning the ears out with a q-tip (be careful and gentle) with rubbing alchol on it. Also try gently pulling out some of the fine hair that grows from right inside the ear. If this started right when he got groomed...maybe the groomer irritated his ears by cleaning or pulling out the hair himself/herself. If that is the case, I would ask the vet to show you how so that you can do it yourself from now on. If your baby winces or yelps when you try to touch his ears...then take him to the vet right away b/c that is definitely some sort of infection and should be treated right away. :( Good luck and I hope your baby feels better soon. |
If your pup appears to have something resembling coffee grinds in his ear, it is ear mites. Even if it isn't an ear infection, it could be a fungal growth from water remaining in his ears. |
Thanks everyone, you are so helpful. Thunder's ears seem to be baby pink... but not almost white. They might be irritated though, I brought him at petsmart for his grooming... and wasnt too impressed because he didnt really look like he got groomed. He's had an ear infection before, so i know what it smells like, and i'm sure its not that. I will check for ear mites though... It still smells like the ear cleaner they used on him. It was Monday and it still smells. I'm not bringing him to Petsmart anymore anyway. I guess you get what you pay for! Will post pics soon. He's so big (Explains the floppy ears!!) |
If it still smells like ear cleaner...maybe you should just wash out his ears. Maybe the cleaner is irritating him. And I would say that not taking him back to that groomer is a great idea. |
I wouldn't take him back at all. There are too many groomers out there who work so fast on our babies, that they don't get the best of care. I would start looking for a good Groomer now. Keep an eye on his little ears, if the smell of cleaner is still there I would have them recleaned. It might be a good idea to have your vet check him out, just to be on the safe side. :) |
Yes, I think you should clean his ears also being that it started right after he got groomed. They say not to use q-tips, but I do. You do have to be very careful. Maybe put him on the kitchen counter or the washing machine so he won't move around while you are doing it. Good luck and let us know what works. |

I think it has to have something to do with irritation from the grooming. I haven't taken Harley to be professionally groomed, but I take my schnauzer all the time. Sometimes she scratches, shakes and rubs her ears alot for a few days right after being groomed. |
Id say if you dont see or smell any oder or dark stuff then its not mites or infection. Might just be from the grooming. I would keep checking and if not better I would take him to the vets. |
Where I live we have these pesky things called foxtails, which are like the heads of growing weeds. And they get in our dogs earas all of the time. The dogs shake their heads a lot, and scratch at their ear(s) when they have one in there. The vets around here are used to them and take them out easily. We can't see them without the otoscope that they use, tho. They are usually way down in there. But if you don't have foxtails where you are, then probably some of the ear cleaner got down in there. I would use a cotton ball with some alcohol on it, and gently clean the part you can reach. Some of the alcohol will actually get down in there and dry up the other stuff. But I would definitely take him to the vet ASAP. Good luck. :thumbup: |
I agree with the above posts that say to use some alcohol on a cotton ball and swipe the part of the inside of the ear that you can get to without hurting your little one. The alcohol will drip down into the ear that you can't get to and dry up what is down in there. If after you've done that, your little one still shakes and scratches, I'd take him to the vet and ask for them to check around. Depending on what the groomer used to pull the hair out, they could have actually pulled the skin off down in there or there could be mites that are starting down deep in the ear, could be dealing with an inner ear infection due to soap residue that was left in the ear too. Who knows? That's what I'd do if it were my furbaby. |
Thanks so much for all the advice. I will definitely use alcohol and try to dry up whatever is in there! I dont think its an infection or mites, cause his ears seems pretty clear. They just smell like the cleaner. It seems better today though. If it continues though, i will call the vet. Thanks again!! |
