What does a new puppy really need...Can you guy's help me out. I would like to start buying some necessary thing's....

just a general list, i'm sure you'll find other things along the way i left out.

food bowls. (ceramic crock type are good for puppies, they cant knock them over as easy..)
food of course, lol
puppy vitamins
nutri cal
a good vet!
bed/blankets
harness/lead
i.d. tag if you use a collar
chew toys, chew toys and more chew toys
a t-shirt or sweater
grooming supplies such as a good pin brush/comb, natural boar bristle brush, shampoo/cond.
at your first vet visit you should get started on heartworm med/ and or flea treatment
piddle pads/newspapers
crate or playpen

when are you getting your new puppy? how exciting!

just to add one more thing to the list above, have an old t-shirt or sock or something with your scent on it to leave with the puppy when you're gone. I've also heard of wrapping a clock that ticks in a blanket or something and putting it in their crate at night or maybe when you're not there. It reminds them of their moms heartbeat. Good luck!!! :)

I would also suggest getting something that has the mom's scent on it...this will really help those first few scary nights for the pups...I did this with my girls and Magic still sleeps with her blanket from her real mom....if you can't get that, I would get a heating pad for nighttime....

The clock wrapped in a blanket is a really good idea. When one of my parents dogs was a puppy it would cry at night so we put a clock wrapped in a cozy blanket and put the pup half on it and she went to sleep right away. It really calms them down and they don't think their alone.

Oh and make sure you get at least a weeks worth of Good Sleep before you get your pup ;)

Don't forget some sort of healthy treat for rewards, toothbrush, toothpaste, baby gates for keeping the little one out of rooms or stairs, and pee-pad spray to help with training. I don't think I forgot anything.

That does seem to cover about everything. I love the "get a good week of sleep before you get your new puppy". This is a wonderful piece of advice. I tend to buy my puppies human infant toys more than puppy toys. The teething toys are wonderful for the puppies...nothing filled with fluid, but the kind that is a suffed animal with the rubbery hands and feet for teething on.

Thanks for everything...I am not getting him until mid-December, but I want to get thing's now so I want have to run out last minute, upon the Holiday Rush.

And patience is another commodity. Someone should come up with a way to package love and patience, and sell it to everyone!! It would be expensive, but without it, life would be horrible!!

1.A WONDERFUL vet (better if they specialize in small breeds)
2.Blanket (an electric one sometimes does the trick too.. helps w/ upset bellies)
3.Crate (sized proportional to your pup.. too much room might mean poop & pee issues)

5.pee pads (always a GREAT idea!)

9.Styptic powder or pads (in case of small minor cuts or nails trimmed too short)

14.X-pen (for safe & controlled play time)
15.Something from his breeder that smells like his mum or litter mates (my breeder let him choose his fav fuzzy toy out of his xpen and to this day it's still the one he guards from everyone and drags everywhere!) And something with your scent on it.
16.Ok no one's allowed to laugh at me for this one! There's a teddy bear you can buy @ walmart in the baby section and when turned on and timed it plays the soft sound of a heart beat(just like when they were in the womb) and it helps babies to sleep! It's made to strap onto the cribs bars (babies could roll over in their sleep and suffocate themselves) so you can attach it to their x-pen or on top of their crate.
17.Heavy water & food dishes (ceramic is good) plastic isn't a good choice bc they're so light that they tip and bc they trap and hold bacteria very easily.
18.Lots of sleep BEFORE the puppy gets there.. :p
19.Bathing supplies, big fluffy towels (stick em in the dryer before you wash them so they're all warm and comfy!), look for natural shampoo(less chance of irritation)
20.Some warm sweater or coat (especially if you're getting your new baby this winter!)

the dish.. I would suggest stainless steel ;)

hehe I had a stainless steel bowl once.. He licked the edge and gave me a funny look like it tasted funky! So I just got him a ceramic one lol :D I didn't experiment and lick it myself but I just imagined the yucky taste you get from some metals! :p

yep, stainless steel is the best for adult yorkies...however my puppies ALWAYS tip them over due to the light weight of them, get in them and tip them over, get water all over the place....food every where but in them! ha ha! so i use a heavy crock type bowl for small puppies only. then i gradually change them to stainless steel once they are out of the (everything i see is a toy phase) :D

i for one will not laugh at you about the teddy bear with the heartbeat. i have an older version of it that i got at a baby shower for my daughter over 8 yrs ago and i have used it for my puppies!

ah the one I missed.. the digital camera! Good choice! Bc they are anything but good photo subjects and you're going to need plenty of options to go back and delete and edit them! lol

I got some really, really soft baby blankets from Target. They are rolled up in a tube shape and are $4.99. I used a cat crate with a door that opens on the top and side. I got a little crate liner and folded the blanket up to fit inside the liner...It makes a little groove just big enough for a little puppy to lay in...then I put a little fleece toy in and put it by my bedside. This way he could smell my scent and I could hear him if he wiggled around. He was very calm and slept most all night!!! I couldn't believe it! We are getting another yorkie just before Thanksgiving, too. I hope she adjusts as well as he did. Good luck....can't wait to see picts.

I'll add my two cents worth...

I like a breakaway collar with a bell on it. The bell lets you know where they are all the time so you aren't as likely to step on them until you get the 'yorkie shuffle' down pat. :rolleyes: The breakaway aspect keeps them from getting caught on something and hurting themselves. You usually find them in the cat section of a pet store.

I also like to have Cheerios on hand to use as an for training. I've never met a dog that didn't love them, and they are small enough that you can have a decent training session without filling them up.

Also you might want to find a good product for cleaning up accidents - because they will happen! There are a lot of them out there, and everyone has opinions on them, so do a search and hopefully find something that works for you.

I recently found a product called 'Paws' that seems to work at removing the odor. I also like 'Fresh and Clean' because it leaves a really clean smell that I like, but it doesn't seem to matter to the dogs as far as returning to the same spot/scent. So, I find that I use both products.

Fabreeze is also a very good friend of mine. :)

Last, but not least, if you get a young puppy, children's hand puppets come in handy. They like to chew on your hands, but if you let them they will break the skin with their sharp little teeth. The puppets let you play and bond but still have skin on your knuckles! :p

Some people might say that it's not good to 'teach' them that its okay to bite your hand, but all of my dogs have grown out of it and it's never been a problem. But then I'm the Alpha BI itch in our house so they don't have an option. ;)
