How to break the news! When looking for a puppy from a breeder you are not supposed to pick the first puppy you see :animal-sm . So this is where I run into my problem. When you are at a breeders house looking at their puppies they know you are interested in buying a pup otherwise you would not be their. But how do you tell the breeder nicley your puppies are not what I am looking for and leave without one of their puppies! I do not want them to think their puppies are not good enough or anything and hurt their feelings :unlove: . But I also do not want to buy a puppy if I am not happy with the breeder or puppies either. I hope that made sense. By the way I love our new smilies! :teeth: Thanks once again |
I would first let them know that they're great puppies. Then just tell them that you're going to give it a lot of thought, and will give them a call if you decide to keep one. That way, you're not offending them or misleading them. |
i would have to agree............ just tell them you need to think about it more before you commit to something as big as a puppy....they shoudl understand and support youre honesty |
i bet you are a very nice person. i bet you are one of those people i used to be. try to be polite to the person who just cut line at the post office. LOL i totally agree with the previous post i just had to add the upper. you sounded like such a nice, caring person. i wish more people in this world were like that. (like i used to be,LOL) |
I have to agree with all the other posts. A good breeder would want someone to take time to make such a big decision of purchasing a yorkie puppy. They are long time commitment. Good luck in your search for your new yorkie................Cindy |
I too think you are sweet for worrying about their feelings - not a lot of people would. I agree, let them know you will think about it - and if they do call you and ask, let them know that you really don't want to hurt their feelings, but you just decided not to get that puppy :) |
I think I'd have the same problem if I saw a litter of baby Yorkies. One thing you can do is to subtly suggest that your significant other, or child, or someone you are buying it for needs to take a look first before deciding on which to pick up. And that you are just doing the preliminary inspection/lookover first before you bring them. I think a little white lie would be okay in that situation, as long as you don't string the breeder along into thinking you will buy it. It's okay to say no. If a breeder treats you like a used car salesman (the bad ones) where they try to pressure you into buying and paying right away, I'd run far, far away. |
All of the above is great advice. I have looked at pups and turned them down. I just thanked them for taking the time to show me thier pups and told them that I would like to think about it overnight and if I decide to get one that I would call them first thing the following morning. If they pressure you and say something like "I have other's coming to look or I can't hold a pup should someone want to buy today" I would tell them that I totally understand and should someone come and buy one thats ok, I just feel that this is such an important decision that I feel I must really think about it. I didn't feel like this was stringing them along. Just be very careful when looking at pups. They are all cute but trust your gut. |
Well thanks everyone! I guess you can say I am a nice person. I just try to respect others and would not want to intentially (sp) hurt someone else. Sometimes being nice backfires though people tend to try to walk on you then. Thanks for the great advise! This is why I love this board! |
I have to agree with everyone. Just let them know you appreciate them taking the time to let you into their home to view the puppies and that you will think about it and get in touch the next day should you decide to buy. I know I'd want honesty if I were breeding. I don't want someone to buy a pup from me who's going to be unhappy with it. I'd rather them buy from another breeder and get the puppy they wanted. And a good breeder will understand your reasons for that and want the best for you as well. Good luck in your search! I hope you find the perfect baby. :aimeeyork |
I can generally tell when someone isn't really all that interested and will say something like "Why don't you go home and think about it, because this is a major decision". It's only happened a couple of times. I did have a person that came with her father and loved little Abby but told me they wanted to go home and talk with the brother so he could feel part of the decision. I did have someone that was waiting for a phone call if they didn't take the puppy but I didn't tell them because I didn't want them to think I was pressuring them with a sales pitch. I waited until 2:00pm and heard nothing from the girl so I finally called the gentleman and he came down that evening and took Abby. Well, the girl emailed me three days later telling me that they really wanted her and could they come back to see her. I had to tell them she was no longer available. So you see it works both ways. If I, as a breeder, am honest about people waiting in line, it seems like a sales pitch but in reality it isn't. I'm sure there are breeders that would but I would rather keep all my puppies than push them on someone that's looking. www.simplyyorkies.com |
If your honest it shouldn't hurt any feelings. Thank them for their time and tell them you didn't see quite the pup your looking for. Its not mean or upsetting if a breeder has something not for you. It just means its for someone else. :) |
I'm no help, because despite knowing I shouldn't buy the first puppy I looked at, I did! :) It was an hour and a half drive and his parents were the cutest, most well-tempered dogs I have ever met and he was adorable... his parents were 3 and 3.5lbs and usually people charge $1,000+ for the puppies, despite how big they will get and I got my puppy for $500. I am really glad I did to, because I love him to pieces! |
I Agree Honesty, Is The Best For Yourself The Breeder And Of Course The Puppy.. :) |
In my opinion, you have to be honest with yourself. You have to get the one YOU want . I wouldn't think any breeder who cares about their pups would want you to "settle" for anything else. As we can see, you're obviously not going to be ugly to them so like everyone else has said, thank them for their time. Maybe even tell them what chracteristics you are looking for ie. if they don't have the color, coat type, too big/little or something like that. They may even lead you to another breeder. And if they get ugly and hateful, well, that would show me that he/she is a person who doesn't care about the puppy, just the sale and it's a person I wouldn't want to give my money to anyway. Besides, have you ever seen yorkie puppies sit around long? They are going to get sold to somebody soon, so don't feel bad for the puppy! :aimeeyork |
