Really need advice, separating during heat Hi folks, Sorry for the long post, but I think the details will help with the question. I'm new here and have a situation that I really need your wisdom on. My husband and I got a male yorkie puppy 3 weeks ago (7 months old), and a female 2 weeks ago (10 months old) from separate breeders, and each breeder knew what we were getting. Neither have been spayed/neutered, and the breeder of the female told us she expected the girl's first heat in August/September, so we had plans to spay/neuter them both this month. However, my little girl went into heat about a week ago ( ! ) and is now into her second week. We were very surprised and not certain what to do. I read as much as I could here and on the internet to get educated fast. We allowed them VERY supervised time together at first (literally standing over them during play time, at which time she wasn't interested in him), but both breeders said to absolutely separate them at this point, which we are. They are crate trained in separate crates, and both are pee pad trained. But, they are very bonded to us and to each other, so my problem is their stress level. They are now both really wanting to be together, and are in their crates but when out, we either take them for a walk or separate them in our bedroom with a gate so that each can have potty time and time with us. Now though they are crying and barking in the crates and when they are separated by the gate during the day (I work from home, thankfully), and the stress I'm afraid is causing potty issues too (soft stools). I feel SO badly for them, I would never have brought two puppies into this situation had I known! We tried different rooms for them too but that was only worse. We are doing everything we can to both spend time with each dog, even one dog in a crate while we train/play with the other, but I am afraid they are in for at least 2 more weeks of stress. Also, I need to be able to leave them alone in their (separate) crates for an hour or two at a time so that I can work. Any and all advice is so much appreciated, we love our little ones so much but have never been through this and want to make it as easy on them as possible. THANK YOU! |
I totally feel your pain. We had a similar situation but with our Australian Shepherds. Stormie had a litter last August and will have at least one more (maybe 2). We skipped a heat and will breed again this August. Problem was when she was in heat, the male that we kept (Blaze) to be used as a stud was near-impossible! I don't even think it was so much sexual desire (he was only 6 months or so) but the fact that he had never been separated from his mom for any great length of time. They had to be kept in separate kennels at all times and they aren't used to being in kennels that long. I felt so bad for them BUT knew it was the right thing to do. If you're already into the 2nd week, you're halfway there. Be strong and just wait this out and then spay and neuter as planned. It's tough but you know it's best for them. Just be very aware that a gate between them is not always sufficient. They CAN and WILL find ways to procreate THROUGH the gate (given it has holes big enough). Good luck! |
Since you're planning to spay/neuter (thank you BTW for helping to control the pet population!), why not move the male's neuter up to as soon as possible? That way you should be taking away some of his desire to get to your female. |
As hard as it is your gonna have to keep them in separate rooms. Your situation is an accident waiting to happen and they can breed between gates even |

Thanks for the replies and understanding....yes we had thought of spaying our little guy now but were concerned that his drive would still be there during his recovery since she would still be somewhat in heat, and were concerned he might hurt himself. For that reason we plan to have them both done at the same time. Now my little girl has diarrhea, I believe from stress (no vomiting). talked to breeder who said to boil white rice for her, so I did that and she ate about a little less than a quarter cup. I'm concerned she will dehydrate, even though her water is available at all times. Hopefully she will drink some! I feel so badly for them both! |
oops, neutering I meant, and - can/do girls get stomach upset/diarrhea when in heat? She is in the part of her cycle where she is very receptive to being mated - thanks! |
sorry you are going through this...yes it is hard on them...but so would an unwanted pregnancy..........as for neutering....dont do it while she is in heat.......it will be too hard on him..............and totally separate them...not just a gate......as others have said...........yes they can tie between the gates...........and that is very very dangerous.........especially for the male.......it could do damage to him if it was to happen...........if you could keep them in separate rooms that would be the best..........good luck and know that in another week or so things will be better...........but dont go on 21 days................females have been known to tie as late as 28-30 days from first day of heat............so it is best to keep them apart for 30-35 days..........again good luck. |
Will your male's breeder take him back for a couple of weeks? That would be the best solution, to get him completely out of the house. Two intact dogs in the same house usually find a way to mate, even through gates. That would be a disaster since your girl is so young. |

As far as digestive issues, Addie went through one heat cycle when she was about 10 months old before her spay and she ate and pooped normal. But, there wasn't a male in the same household either. |
Thank you again so much for all the advice! I don't think that the breeder can take him back, but I may see if my parents could take him, although weirdly (or maybe not?) they both seem more stressed when apart even in different rooms or if my husband takes him into another room, or for a walk. They really bonded well as buddies before her heat and hated being apart then too. Fortunately, when they are gated separately both my husband and I are literally on top of them so nothing can happen. It's only for periods when we want to give them attention, love and play time out of the crate - never when they are alone. I would just never forgive myself if our little girl got pregnant on our watch! They're still too mischievous on a normal day to leave out of our sight anyway! One other question I forgot to mention - our boy's testicles are not descended, and I read that this may affect his fertility (although not drive) - in your opinion is that true? I still would never take the chance! Again - THANK YOU! |
