Pup has 'crazy' hair! I just got back form the vet and the lady (vet nurse??) that gave my pup his shots said he had crazy hair and that he was all matted up! I have been brushing him as much as I can. He does look 'scraggly' but I never noticed any matting! I feel terrible! She said I needed to have him shaved...I don't want to do this. Does anyone have any suggestion on how to fix this before I have to just shave him. He is only 18 weeks old. I swear I still don't see the tangles but she said they were at the root of his hair:confused: When is the proper time to get him groomed anyway? Could I not be brushing him 'hard' enough?? Thanks! |
I wouldnt shave him just spray in some conditioning spray and give him a good brush :) |

Have you tried the Crazy Dog grooming sprays? Those are good, leave the hair clean and shiny. |
You need to make sure you are brushing correctly, just brushing the surface doesn't get the hair next to the skin. The Madan pin brush is a good inexpensive brush. Mimimomo is a member here and her website is toplinepet.com. When you are brushing start at the bottom and work your way up. I was just brushing the surface too when I first got Jada, and from reading here on YT I learned the correct way to brush her. The grooming forum is a good resource for any questions you might have on brushing and general grooming. |
My sister in law had this same problem..I groom her dog for her,,and the first time I did, he was matted to the skin, but by looking at him you would never know, she was only brushing the outer layer. she said she brushed him everyday, like I was crazy when I told her how matted he was..she said she was afraid to brush too hard, that she would hurt him..I had to explain that I knew she meant well, but she was hurting him more by not brushing all the way through. (as mats can hurt ).I had to show her the mats before she would believe me...she was using a soft baby brush, and it just did not get though the hair,,So I will give you the same advice I gave her,,Go and pick up a good metal dog comb, it does a much better job, and after you comb them with that, and you know that the hair is combed all the way through, than you can use your brush..good luck, |
I had the same problem with my baby (when he was a baby). I just went ahead and had him shaved as a puppy because it really bothered him to have me brush out all the mats, especially the ones close to the skin. I didn't want to traumatize him with painful brushing as i didn't want him to think it would hurt every time. The hair grows back really fast, and since then it has been much easier to maintain with regular brushing, which he sits still for and actually enjoys. Sometimes it's just better to have them shaved and start over with a fresh coat that you can maintain from the start. I think the problem was that when he was a puppy still with his mom it got tangled playing with the other puppies and being cleaned by mom and as the hair grew longer it just grew more tangled. |
A slicker brush is a must have item. Just take a little mat at a time and brush from the tip end of the hair upward being extra careful not to scrape the skin. After all the mats are out, then use a nice conditioner that you can spray on and leave in. Be sure to brush every day with a pen brush making sure you get the soft coat next to the skin. When you shampoo your baby, make sure all mats are out, then use a very gentle shampoo and rinse and rinse and rinse and rinse again. It's very important to completely rinse, then use a good conditioner. |
