Luxating Patellas???? Not sure Ok, I just followed the link in another post to the medical probs that can be found in yorkies and as I was reading I got kinda nervous. It said: Quote:
At this time I have no interests in breeding her but I can't promise I may not have a litter with her depending on her size later for some more furbabies around the house. (Not to sell!) But if this is a condition of her I wouldn't feel right having any litters. :( :aimeeyork |
Most dogs are middle-aged when this occurs and it is normally accompanied by pain, whining, dragging hind quarters, etc. I think most pups (and some full) grown dogs to the bunny-hop run from time to time. Trixie did it because it was the only way she could get over the grass. I had a long talk with our vet about this once because when we got Flash (our Basset) she told us she had it. I panicked, but then she told me that was common with Bassets (have you ever seen there legs) and she would be concerned if Flash DIDN'T have it. I think it is safe to assume your baby is OK. |
If a dog skips or carries a leg, you should have it checked. Luxating patella can be diagnosed many times VERY early. In fact I know of some pups who were diagnosed with it at their 6 week old appt. I have heard of many dogs being diagnosed around their first birthday. Have it checked on monday, it is a very simple maneuver the vet does, bends the knee while feeling all around in there. |
I think this is the same thing my vet told me about... You can even tell yourself....w/ your baby on all 4's grab their back leg w/ one hand and move it back and forth being sure to bend the knee...with the other gently cup their knee. If you can feel a popping feeling when moving the leg then your pup could have it. Bentley has a knee cap that floats abit now but the vet said not to worry yet, it could simply be the bones growing at different times. If he doesn't grow out of it by 1.5 yrs than surgery may be an option. The kneecap is supposed to sit in a "Groove" in the bone...sometimes that groove is too shallow causing it to "float"....if surgery is needed they simply go in and carve out the groove a bit to make it deeper so the kneecap can fit inside properly. Puppy parts grow at different stages/rates, this is the same principle of going through that gangly stage where they are all legs, the rest just hasn't caught up yet. So do worry too much yet, she will be fine either way as long as she always has mammas love!! Start out by calling your vet, if they did a Puppy Wellness Check on her when you first got her they may have checked for this already. If not make an appt for a Wellness check...you'll pay the same and they will check teeth and everything to make sure she is growing properly. Good luck! |
My vet told me some do grow out of it if it is diagnosed at a young age. Also lots of puppies bunny hop and it is normal. |
Baby has this on her left back knee....it doesn't bother her very often, which makes sense because the vet said it wasn't very severe. She was diagnosed at about a 1.5 years. Sorry I don't know much about it occurring in puppies, but I hope your baby is okay! Let us know, and remember even if she is diagnosed, it doesnt mean that she can't live a completely wonderful life! |
I've seen mine hop like a bunny, particularly when after something like a lizard. But, the LP is something my vet checked for when mine were puppies, so I think it can be found early sometimes. Unless my vet wanted to charge more but she gave me an explanation about it at the time, so I think she was on the up and up. |
I would have her checked. Good Luck. |
I just found out last week that Twinkie has a luxating patella, my vet was just feeling her out before her kennel cough vaccine, and she felt it :( . She didn't say how bad it was, but I have never seen her limp before. My vet said she might be fine or she might need surgery when older. I'm hoping she will be fine cuz now I'm all worried about her... |
