Aggressive behavior towards small children Hi everyone, I need some advice. My yorkie is 2 yrs old and sweet as pie with me and our family, but when we are out in public if any children and sometimes adults come up to him he acts very aggressive. I have never had a dog act this way and I am lost on how to react. I warn people that I prefer they not pet him because I worry he may bite. He is very attached to me and if he is lying on my lap and my husband comes to pick him up he growls and acts very aggressive yet my husband says he never bites down on him, but that does not make me feel better. My daughter was attacked and seriously injured by her friends dog a few years ago and I cannot stand the thought that my own dog could hurt someone. Is it possible to stop this behavior? I know that some dogs are very leary of children so is this just the way he will always be? Thanks for any advice... Lauren |
I am bumping this for you. Might want to post this in the training section. Members that frequent that section will hopefully have some suggestions. My guess is that you will be told to do obedience training with him. I have two senior girls that I NEVER allow around people. Don't trust them. My boys are better but I am still leery. Good luck. ~Joanne~ |
Hi, thanks so much. I will repost in the training section. I appreciate the response! |
I was going to say training. :) It could be a fear response since he doesn't know what the kids will do. They move so fast and just stick their hands out towards our pups and that can be scary. Kaji is fearful too, but he has the "flight" response instead of "fight." He'd much rather run away than have to deal with kids. From afar, he'll growl at kids to let them know he's unsure. If they get too close he runs. He's getting better with training, and because I now completely control every encounter with strangers. |
posted a response in the training section :) |
This may sound dumb but how about training the kids? I know what you mean I could run in the opposite direction when I see kids, but I've allowed them to approach with Teegy firmly in my control and explained the rules to them. I have a bunch of kids in my building, who just scream doggie doggie doggie, so I've sat with them and taught them how to react calmly. Try it with kids you know that your dog sees all the time. I was out having lunch the other day and a woman came over with her little kid to say hi to Teegy because her sisters Yorkie who we had just met, isn't very nice with her. He was very gentle and so sweet. I think I need trained around screaming kids, is there a section on Yorkie talk for me? |
