Worried about 4th of July madness with my babies and worried about how to handle their fear of the noise and chaos. Some people say "comfort them", others say "no, don't comfort them", yet others say "act normal, like nothing's going on." Last year they were losing their minds with all the firecrackers and people making noise. I can't "act normal" when my babies are under stress, it stresses me. What has worked for you? What happens if I comfort them? I've comfort them in the heavy rain and lightning and they're not as scared of it as they used to be. Any thoughts?? Thank you ;) |
My friend and I are on the same boat. We don't know what to do. This will be our first 4th of July with our babies. I hope you get good suggestions. |
Actually was just thinking the same thing when I took Kasha for her evening walk. I feel awful that she's going to be scared (or so I project on her) with all the crazy noises. I'd love to hear any advice! Wish I had some :-) |
Are you all going out somewhere? I'm staying in but I'm assuming we'll hear the fireworks. I'm going to treat it like thunder I suppose. |

I am going out with the future in-laws. She will be crated & in the house with the older and very deaf family dog... so she wont be alone but I feel bad. I ignore thunder cause it happens so frequently in Fla. |

I used the alcohol free Rescue Remedy on Zeke and Mr Chips. It seemed to calm them down some. Zeke just trembles so violently at times of thunder/fireworks (bottle rockets are the worst) that I have had to wrap him up in a blanket. Mr Chips is a recent foster so I am still learning about him. |
I guess i'm lucky cause Pasquale doesnt even react to fireworks. Last nite we sat out on the deck til dark and the guy behind us was lighting off his "pre" fireworks display.(He does fireworks for EVERY holiday :rolleyes:) Anyways, Pasquale had fallen asleep on one of the chairs...when the fireworks started...he didnt even flinch. He doesnt react to thunder either. I think i'm worse with the thunder LoL |
I had a pic nic at my place last night. I kept my dogs outside for a while and when the food was brought out I fed my dogs in the house put on the air and tv. They were mad at first barked for about 5 min. but the calmed down. I did not want them outside in case people were dropping food. I did not need any sick dogs:cool: when the people next door let off fireworks I went inside calmed my dogs down and turned the tv up a bit. They were fine. I think a lot of times they sense your emotions to it all. |
If you plan to stay in, turn the tv on and turn up the volume to drown out the fireworks noise. It worked for Rio last year. Now that we've added baby Bullet, not sure if it will work for him but I have my fingers crossed! I don't plan on taking them outside at all - their little ears are just way too sensitive. |
Last year was Zhoie's first 4th, she was 6 mos, didn't seem to bother her. Last night the neighbor's started letting off fireworks early. Zhoie was on the couch with me and at some of the really loud ones she would bark, I just stay on the couch watching TV didn't saying anything to her and she would lay back down. Now, tonight we go up to my daughter's which only 2 circles up in our development and Zhoie will go in her cage. I too will turn the TV up a little louder and leave it on, she can see it from the sunroom where her cage is. I'm hoping to come home and she won't be terrified. Keeping fingers crossed. |
4am last night I hear BOOM BOOM. Grrr, Cooper woke up and barked for a while. I had to put the tv on and put the a/c up high to drown out the sound. |
I was also wondering what to do. This is my Wally's first 4th and he has been freaking out each night so far with people trying out their fireworks. He shakes violently and doesn't know where to go. I put my 4 in my bedroom with the airconditioner on and the tv kind of loud to drown out the noise. But I have to be in there with him and hold him. He likes to burrow under the covers so I will confort him in there tonight. I am dreading it. I have tranquilizer meds that I have to give my Trixe when I cut her nails (could you believe it?) :rolleyes: I don't use it I just cut her nails one here one there. I can't give them any meds I don't like it. I guess we will be hold up in my room for the night. Poor little guys. I couldn't imagine not comforting them. They get scared just like us. |

I'm in the camp that you try to act as if it is no big deal, and hopefully they'll pick up on your queue, but it really has a lot to do with your dog's personality, if they tend to be more timid or if they are fearless. |
