What is a chocolate yorkie? I saw it mentioned on a breeder's website.

Off colour yorkie. Instead of steel and tan, they is a 'chocolate' brown colour.

Some breeders breed off colors and claim that they are rare and special. Each breed has a standard that describes how a perfect example of the breed should look. While there are no "perfect" dogs, a breeder should try their best to breed for standard, however some breeders have found it much more profitable to breed for different colors. While there is nothing wrong with the off colors, and these dogs make suitable pets, they should be spayed and neutered and placed in pet homes. However, breeders have found they can make more money by breeding dogs who aren't standard, and selling to them to the uneducated public who crave for things that are "different. Please support breeders who aren't breeding for profit. Here's more information on the chocolate and the genes involved that produces that effect. I have had one chocolate yorkie pup over the years. Even though she was a very nice example of the chocolate color...I didn't think of her as "rare and special'. But she was quite beautiful. She is happily living her life in a pet home. Where she was placed...I might add...at a pet price. :)

For the op...this is what a chocolate yorkie's colors look like...

I usually do not like the chocolates at all... the way they look, the one in your pictures is particularly very nice looking !

yes, Chocolate is just a "non standard color", should not be desired when breeding .

It's mostly a lie or a candy bar. They exist in breeding but you don't see them around town or so forth due to health issues. Blue bred is blue dead.

She is absolutely adorable even if the 'choclate' color isn't the breed standard. I love her!

Could you be more specific on what health issue's exists due to the chocolate color?

I have never heard nor seen a chocolate having any health problems due to color. There are thousands of chocolate finished Champions in other breeds such as Cocker Spaniels, Labs, Pom's, Chi's, etc...

How come these chocolates don't have these health concerns you speak of? The only difference between these chocolates and the chocolate yorkie is they are an accepted color with in their standards...where the chocolate yorkie is not. We get it..it's not a standard color. But it's not right to scare people with false statements such as that.

It's not fair to lump the other off colors in with the blues either...IMO.

There are other threads here in Y T that have many discussions about the health issues and their links to a few colors, specially the "Blue". So it is not that anyone is trying to get people scared.
As far as i know the "biewers" are also a variation of colors and i have not yet seen any links about health and color on this one being discussed.
So research right here on yorkie talk, you will see that nobody is "trying to scare people with false statements such as that", just trying to inform in a healthy way !
You just need to get better informed about the specifics of each breed !

Perhaps you could point it out to all of us because I certainly don't remember any threads with health issues related directly to chocolate yorkies.

In fact the only off color that I have seen that has health problems from being an off color is a blue born.

If I am wrong please correct with me facts and sources proving that by being a chocolate yorkie they are unhealthy or may have health problems because of their color.

I never said the blue was a scare tactic. It certainly does come with health issue's...and some can be quite severe.

What I did say was...unlike the blues...there is just no proof that the chocolate or liver color has any health issues due to it's color alone. And once again...it should not be lumped together with the blues just because they are both "off" colors.
Also, I consider myself well informed on a few breeds. The yorkie and the colors it can be born with being just one of them. Maybe it is others who need to become "informed' before they spread assumptions as fact.

what are you talking about? red yorkies are not any less healthier than any other colour yorkie. you dont see them around town because it is a double reccessive gene, like human red heads.
