I am in a quandry - useful suggestions needed! So I thought I would keep Bailey even though he isn't quite as the seller said he was. He needs dental surgery (to the tune of $600+) AND he has LP and should have surgery for that AND he needs to be nautered. (Btw, the vet wont do any surgery until the dental surgery is complete because his mouth is so infected that he said the risk would be to great.) He is actually very sweet. BUT... Yesterday he attached the puppies THREE times! (I have three 12 week old yorkies that I am taking care of for my brother until their owners are ready for them.) The puppies were not aggravating him. They were laying on the floor at my daughters fee. (These puppies weigh more than he does. And they are close to being bigger than him. ) When my daughter tried to pull him away, he tried to bite her. She had a phobia of dogs when she was little. Now she is terrified of him... and she is 14! What do I do guys? I can't ethically sell him because of his issues. But I can't keep him if he is going to be a biter either. I feel so horrible and guilty... and I just don't know what to do. |
I'm sorry that things are going wrong with Bailey. Can you work with a trainer and see if this is an issue that can be helped? |
Hi and while I'm no expert I'd keep them seperated so there's no more fighting the other part of what you said is a personal decision but this biting could be due to jealousy and maybe when the puppies are gone he'll be back to normal if he wasn't behaving this way before... edited to add - how big is he ? you said 12 week old puppies are bigger than he is ? |
How old is Bailey and what is LP. it could be male aggression as he has not been neutered. How long have you had him. If you love him and are going to keep him, just be patient and loving and discipline him firmly when he does something wrong. You want to socialize him, so always be around when he is with the other dogs and take him with you when you leave the room. |
I'm wondering if the dental problems could be making him cranky? There is credit care for that sort of thing. You don't have any interest for longer than a year, and monthly payments are very reasonable. CareCredit Healthcare Finance - Payment Plans and Financing for Cosmetic Surgery, Dental, Vision, Hearing, Veterinary & Other Medical Procedures I agree with the others, keep him away from the puppies, they can be very aggravating to an older dog. Best of luck! |
Yes , keep him away from the pups as with the fighting it could make meanies out of the pups. That's not the kind of social skills you want them to pick up. |
Thanks everyone. Yes, I have been keeping him seperate from the other dogs. And I think his dental infection might really be the cause of his situation. I talked to my vet here in DC, then called my regular vet back home for advise as well. I haven't had this guy even a month yet. So unfortunatly, I haven't really bonded as much with him. (if you read my other posts you know I'm a mush-ball for Crickett). My real concern is both for my daughter and for other kids. But I think we have a solution. My biological Mom has been wanting another little yorkie for some time. She and my handicapped sister are home all day, have a lot of experiance with all kinds of animals and basic pet health care. Their home is quiet and calm, and my sisters favorite thing to do is love a pet alllllllllllllll day long. This is just what Bailey needs. As an added bonus, the cost of his dental surgery is more than half the cost it would be here, AND my home vet had the more advanced machine for anesthia so I wont be too worried about that. Woohoo! So at the end of the day, Bailey will get the love and attention he needs (and surgery too). He can stay in the family. AND...I don't have to worry about liability! |
That is wonderful things are going to work out for you and Bailey. I hope all goes well with his surgeries. sending you a pm. |
