Warning to Everyone For everyone whos yorkies likes to woof down their food..Please be sure to mash the food up ..I gave my 6 month old some can dog food and cut it into small piece but she woofed it down so fast ..she got a piece stuck in her throat. Liked to scared me to death..I was able to get it out of her throat but if it would have been farther down her throat, I would have probley lost her. I usually give them food and go do dished or something while they eat ...Thank goodness I was standing right there watching or she would have died...So take extra care when feeding.... Sherry |
Oh my gosh that is so scary. Im so glad that she is ok. TY for the warning. Gucci is not a wofer, she is very picky, but thanks is good to know. |
Thanks for the warning. I'm glad you were right there and she is okay. |
Oh that is scarey. Both of mine eat really slow. |
Scary experience! Another way to deal with it, is to give them food in large chunks "big bites" - so they have to crunch and chew. That is good for their teeth and will help them eat slower. And there will be no getting small bits stuck in their throat. |

That is scary thank God you were there. I always worry about them swallowing or getting something caught in their throats. |
Since the pups, we have been giving Zoe canned puppy food and she inhales it ..i am also worried about choking..I know how scary that is!! I'm so relieved you were there and able to get it out.... |
I never had a yorkie that gulped their food, but Dennis twice now almost choked to death. Yes it was very scary! I gave him a dog biscuit, cut about an inch long and he got it lodged in his upper pallet. He was only about 12 weeks old and a little over a pound. I saw him cocking his head and moving in circles so I grabbed him and realized what had happened. I was afraid to put my hand in their, that I would somehow push it down his throat, but as the seconds past there was no other way. It took a while but I managed to push it forward and he spit it out. I am still very careful with his treats, so far he stays out of trouble with greeny bites and he loves them. So glad your baby is OK! Sue |
Sherry.... glad everything turned out OK with Izzy. I have stuck my finger down the throat of many of my yorkies.... most of the time it is part of a "pig ear" they've been chewing on... they get soft and when they are almost done with it they have a tendancy to try to swallow it..... I don't give them the pig ears that often..... Thanks for the warning. |
Tuffy likes to inhale his food too.. So my solution to that was to put his meal into a rolling treat ball. That way he has to push the ball around until a piece comes out before he can eat it. It really slows him down and he doesn't just swallow his kibble anymore. |

I hope you find a solution :) |
