'baby proofing' your house for puppy I've done tons of things to baby proof my house for when I get Mango tomorrow! What are some ways that you did when you got your puppy? |
Well I vacuumed like a champ first! Unfortunately my apartment is fully carpeted but my BF's house is all hardwood which is better for accidents. I bought an ex-pen which I use during the day for him to play in but when I'm home with him I use it as a gate so he can't get into any cords or behind the couch :) I also have his crate set up in the corner of the room with it opened and his bed in it so he gets used to it and can go in an out as he likes and a pee pad in the kitchen and also by the door. I'm potty training him to go outside but those are just for precaution :) I also put baby-proof outlet plugs in each of the outlets only because I'm completely paranoid haha. |
i bought protective covers for my wall plugs... i did this AFTER hammer decided he wanted to lick them! They are cheap and well worth it! |
Put all electrical cords out of reach and cover all unused electrical outlets (plastic plug thingies can be found in the baby aisle at many stores). ETA: mentioned above Put all houseplants out of reach -- many of them are toxic for pups. Put all household cleaners, food and medicine, garbage, and anything else that a pup may chew or digest out of reach. Some pups are crafty and able to open lower cabinets. |
Puppy proof Okay, I also did the outlets, plus I put things on both side of the TV stand so she couldn't get behind it and chew cords. I also put pillows behind the couch and loveseat so she couldn't go back there and chew or potty. I also put a pillow behind/underneath the rocker/recliner so she couldn't get under it and I smash her. She stays in the family room, so I made sure my puppy gates had holes small enough and bought an IRIS puppy pen to keep her in when I left the house. It's a tile floor so accidents are easy to pick up. No toys that she could possibly distroy and swallow (like small bells). My baby is now about 5.5 months and I also have an 18 month too. I have also put a superyard xt in the back yard for her potty training. She knows when I put her in it that she needs to potty to get out. I also don't have to chase her around the back yard. It worked great for my older yorkie and is working very well for my baby too. I've puppy proofed my yard too (fixed any gaps in the fence that she could squeeze out of and made sure there was nothing in the yard that she could get in to). Good luck with your new baby. So much fun! |
