chews on cords I was wondering if anyone else has this issue.... Pickles (almost 16 mons old) chews on cords. Her latest was the power supply to my laptop. I don't know how to make her stop. I am beyond frightened that she is going to hurt herself, the laptop power supply was plugged in. I don't want her to spend her life in a crate, what can I do? This habit has really only started in the last 2-3 months....since she had her baby teeth extracted. Any connection? |
Sorry, I don't have any advice. My brother's dog is a little devil with cords. He chews every cord he can find. (And my brother is worried but also getting ticked about replacing them; it's getting pricey.) He also chewed out the screen to their deck. He has a rescue dog who's very skittish. He's well over a year now. They've had him to obedience classes. He's a lab/s**tzu mix. I'm hoping to see if someone says something about your dogs age or the connection to having his teeth out. My Charlie is 5 months old. He does chew on toys and he loves flip flops if he can find them but he's ever gone for cords. And if he can get a hold of a box of tissues or magazines, he's in heaven! Now I'm worried he could start doing it all of a sudden. I sort of thought I was in the clear. |
Khloe who is 22 months still will chew my laptop cord occasionally. I have to really watch her. I have had to replace my cord once already. I don't know how or when she will outgrow this.She is still such a "puppy"! :confused: |
Try some bitter apple spray (available at Petco) on the cord. Supervise closely and give the pup a firm "no" or "uh uh uh" when chewing starts. Then hand your pup an appropriate chew toy. You could also try cord protectors that have a flavored coating that will deter chewing (available online and PetSmart). Some people have reported that the coating attracted their pet, so you will have supervise and test. The most effective ways to stop chewing are training and keeping the cords out of reach. |

Bubba was a cord chewer. We coated the cords with Tabasco sauce (you could also use Franks or Sriracha sauce). He mouthed them a couple of times after that but dropped them. Cruel? but better than having him electrocuted. |
Bitter apple and more bitter apple |
I was sorry to have to use the bitter apple - but I did. It made Ziva so sad, and ruined her appetite, but it was really quick and saved us from ruined baseboards, furniture and plugs. Don't forget to wear gloves, it is nasty stuff! (we have LOTS of toys- Baby chew toys from yardsales work great!- her latest fav is tightly braided fleece strips) |
I lost my little Maui last October from chewing on a cord. She was right behind me while I was working on my computer. I thought she had curled up in her favorite spot to sleep, but she had honed in on a power cord to a scrapbooking tool I had tucked up under the table. I was having trouble with her on other power cords as well before she finally got a good hold on this one. So she liked them for some reason. Now, I have gone through my whole house and pulled cords up or made sure they were where the dogs cannot get to them. If it is something I don't use on a regular basis I unplug it. In all my life with dogs, it was my first experience with a cord chewer, and I hope it was also my last. |
Chews on Cords My little guy loved to chew on cords. He chewed the power cord to our laptop, the power cord to my husband's cell phone and two days in a row chewed the telephone line in my office. I give him plenty of toys to chew on but he would rather the cords. Thankfully, he has stopped chewing on the cords. He also loves my husband flip flops...lol...so we have a pair just for him. |
