Some people.... I'm just amazed at how some people can be "stupid" about simple things, even their pets. I ran into another yorkie owner that was impressed with Bella's harness. They were saying maybe they should get theirs one because of the look. They are using a leash on the collar. The question of the day was, "Is that why mine does that coughing/gagging sound?" Duh!!! I know I go overboard on research, but it just makes sense if one has never owned one or even another breed of dog. So anyway, I explained that yes that's why the dog was making such a noise and eventually he would have to have surgery because of the callapsed treachea or it would kill him. "Oh I guess I need to go to Wal-mart." The dog is 7 years old. Lifetime leash user. P-E-O-P-L-E!!!! Geezzzz... |
:shocked7q Wow! |
Yeah that's really sad, especially for little pups such as Yorkie's...they're so fragile! I couldn't imagine someone ignoring the choking and gagging while walking them for 7 years, yikes!!! |
WHAT. I OVER research everything.. especially before I got Hammer. I remember it being pounded into my brain.. NEVER A COLLAR! Geesh |
I didn't know about the collar issue for a few years with my first yorkie, but once I was educated that was it! Did you know that in order to take the Canine Good Citizenship test for the AKC, the only way they will allow you to test with a harness ass opposed to a collar is a note from your vet. And then your baby can't continue with the protocol to become a therapy dog. According to the person who administered our test. |
I hate it when people don't research about their pets, whether they are dogs, birds, rodents, or anything! It's a huge pet peeve of mine, and I feel so bad for their animals. My "favourite" comment (it's happened twice!) is when someone asked of Indy, "Oh, is she a teacup?" to which I explained that Yorkies are not like Poodles with different sizes. Then there was a long pause and the person followed with, "I have a teacup Yorkie..." Ugh. Research, people! |
I have never used a collar on any dog big or little to walk them. I have always used a harness. People can be so dense sometimes. |
One time when I was out of town with my mom we brought Pippin and one of the pet stores in the West Edmonton Mall offered doggie daycare so we decided that we'll put him in there for an hour or so while we go shop around. Pippin does wear a collar at all times but in places like pet stores he wears his harness, same when he goes for a walk. Anyways the lady looked at me and then Pippin's harness and said "You have to take that off." When I questened her why she said it was because they put choke collars on them when they take them out for a potty break. I looked at my mom and back at the lady and I told her straight up that he had to wear his harness if she was taking him out, she started to question why and me being a person who did her Yorkie research before getting one had to educate the lady on what could happen because Pippin is a puller. Needless to say she was quite rude but let Pippin keep his harness on anyways. Apparently she didn't know anything about Yorkie's like she claimed too the minute she saw him and recognized him as a Yorkie. |
Oh, that is so sad. Sometimes people can be so dense when it comes to these little, babies that count on us so much, it justs TICKS me off!! |
some people can be a little slow. However before i got gatsby thear was a dog boutique that i would go into every chance i got(at this time i had no idea i was getting a dog) and i would look around the manager asked me what kind of puppy i wanted and when i told her yorkie she told me right away he had to have a harness and then the next time i came into the store she gave like 8 pages of info about why a yorkie had to have a harness so when i did get gatsby we went in and and the same lady helped me pick and fit one that lasted him a year and 3 months without her im sure i would have bought the wrong thing and bought it to late. |
Ahh who in their right mind would put a choke collar on a little yorkie?!?! That is the saddest thing I've ever heard :( Stupid, stupid people.... :thumbdown |
I am ashamed to say that I didn't know about harnesses and collapsed trachea for the first few months I had Roxie. Once I started searching around here on YT I realized that I needed to get a harness asap. As soon as I got one, Roxie stopped the gagging and wheezing when I walked her. I also found tons of help regarding food here on YT. I have learned so much about Yorkies just from this forum! |
I use a harness on Max,and he still chokes sometimes when I walk him!I don't know why?I would never use a collar on him,or any other dog for that matter! |
Once I got asked if my cat was a chihuahua.. |

I also did my research many months before I brought home my 2 puppies. I have collars for them, to use ONLY for their ID tags, Rabies tag and Registration tag. I only use a leash with a harness. A harness puts no "stress" or pressure on their neck, especially if they pull on the leash. I had to try several harnesses for both of my puppies to get the proper fit. |
You'd think that at least her vet would have told her about the colapsing traicia problem even if she did not know how to do any internet research for herself. |

That is irritating, but some people just don't know. I remember when we first realized we were getting a yorkie, we went and got a cute little collar for chippy. After being on YT, we realized we needed a harness. What really made me mad though was when I went to one of those free instructional type classes petco has sometimes - well, the lady was being really snippy with Smokey cause Smokey wasn't laying still because he wanted to play with the other dogs. She was huffing and puffing and making comments about him. She had given me a hard time about putting him on a collar and not a harness because it "gives more control". I told her that I refuse to put him on a collar because yorkies have fragile tracheas. I asked about training classes and she gave me information on them and then said (very snippy), "but he has to have a collar to be in our class not a harness". I told her forget it, because she wouldn't be the one up with him at night or anytime of the day when he's practically choking or however it works, she wouldn't be the one taking care of him for the rest of his life, that she wouldn't be paying his medical bills, and that I found find a training facility that would adapt his training around his harness because this was the decision I made for him as MY dog to give him a healthy, happy life. She tried to tell me a collar couldn't do any damage to him at all and used her 80 lb dog as an example. |
I can understand maybe a new pet owner that hasn't quite done much research...but they had their yorkie for seven years and never realized they needed a harness? That is so upsetting! Not only had they missed researching it, but no vet or other yorkie owner they had met in seven years had told them?! That is crazy!! |

I wasn't expecting Lizzy, wasn't expecting to keep her after I got her and never knew about YTs having to have harnesses. Luckily she has never so much as coughed or made a choking sound. In agility, anything but a plain, no tags, no adornments, collar is considered a safety hazard. Also, that is all you can have on your dog when you run them. I use hound collars or martingales, and since they aren't allowed, I run naked dogs. :) |
