Rusty the Killer Yorkie we went over to a friends house on Sat evening to pick up our kids who had been over their playing. We had Rusty with us of course and she told us to bring him in that he would not bother her dog ( a beagle) at all. Well we took him in the house and at first all was well...but after about 15 minutes Rusty started barking, and growling and baring his teeth at this poor dog who was not doing anything to him at all!! I finally had to pick him up and hold him in my lap but it still did not stop the growling. Every time this dog got near me or DH, Rusty would have this low growl and show his teeth. This dog was 3 times his size!!! He has never done this before. We go to my parents house and they have 2 dogs and he gets along just fine with them, A friend of ours with 4 dogs has dog sitted before and he also gets along with her dogs...anyone have any ideas what was up with him? Hubby started calling him Killer ;) |
Maybe the dog was giving off some negative vibes because he didn't like Rusty. Dogs pick up on things like that. |
^ True. Some dogs just don't like each other and sense things we can't. However, by you picking him up, the behavior was probably encouraged. Sounds like he was resource guarding (you being his resource). I definitely wouldn't allow it. The dogs you say he's around, does he see them often? Because if he only sees a certain numbers of dogs, he will get along with just them but not others. They need to be socialized to all different kinds, not just the same dogs over and over. My dads dogs are like this. They get along great with Jackson because he comes over 1-3x a week but other dogs they just bark and bark and bark. |
Well we only picked him up after he snapped at the dog! And no he does not see the other dogs I mentioned very much at all...my parents live 8hrs away so we only see them every few months or so, and our friends have only pet sitted at their house once! We have taken him many places with us and he has seen lots of dogs and he has never reacted like this before...it was just strange. At first we thought he was annoyed because this dog would not play and wrestle with him like our other dog Stedman does but then it turned into him wanting to be a bully to a dog that could have eaten him up in one bite! |
