Hello all I am new to the site, and have a question that is nagging at me and hoping someone would be able to help me out.

I have a sweet little 11 month old girl named Amber, but we are having a huge issue. She is SHEDDING, very short little thin hairs EVERYWHERE I think they are floating through the air in my house. They are def shorter than the hair I can see on her. So my question is do yorkie's have a puppy coat that they shed? Or could there be something more seriously wrong with Amber? It wouldn't be so bad if it were one or two hairs here and there but it is literally everywhere. Any advice is much appreciated!

The initial draw to the breed for me was that they shed minimally, kind of about the same as I shed. I occasionally see some hairs around that are too long to be the cats, but to grey to be mine so I figure they are his. From what I understand the most they shed is during brushing times. Do you have another animal in your house? If not you may need to take your yorkie in (if it's purebred) to see if he/she has some nutritional problem, or some underlying problem that hasn't made itself known yet.

Yes, she is the only animal in the house. She has to go for her bordatella update next month so I will get them to check her out then. It is just stressing me out, especially my husband he freaks out over my hair much less the dogs hair lol. Thanks for your advice!

Some yorkies do have short little undercoat usually very dark. The best thing to do to comb them out is to use a fine toothed comb like a flea comb. That will remove a lot of them. Do it on a regular basis.
At 11 months, she won't have much puppy coat anymore.

Good, someone who know's more on it...I was hoping that this could be true, was browsing the web and there are some pretty bad things associated with yorkies that shed, like they have bad thyroids and what not (you know, all the horror stories but very little real/helpful information). But if some just happen to have an undercoat it sounds like it's not so bad. :thumbup: Thanks Lorraine!

I have some that do some that don't . My Matthew has it, his mother didn't but her mother did. His grandmothers sister had it. You can't tell just from looking at them which one has the short hair undercoat.
Why some do and some don't, that I don't know. Just slightly different coats I guess just as some yorkies can be soft coated some are the true silk and some are even kind of a harsh coat.

Thanks for all of the info y'all!!! It's just my luck that she will probably continue to do this.. but hopefully if I comb her once a day it will calm it down some.:thumbup:

I think the non-shedding breeds still shed during the spring and fall like other dogs. I've found this to be true anyway, but not to the extent of say like a Corgi or GSD.
