please help!
 

I am a first time dog owner and have just received my new addition, a male yorkie. I purchased the potty patch and he used it the first time and that was it. My question is, how do I get him to stay in his bed and stop crying while I sleep! I was only able to sleep 3 hrs before he started crying and he wouldn't stop until I got up. What do I do?

Do you have a small crate that you could put him in and put it on your bed with you. He wants to be near his Mama and now that is you. Make sure the crate Can Not fall off the bed.

:thumbup::thumbup: Agreed, Im no help as I caved and mine have always slept with me (and my late husband) but it was pretty intensive with me always making sure they were able to 'go' when needed -

I'm a very light sleeper so that worked for me but don't really recommend it - not everyone is able to do this. I'll say it worked and no problems but still - when they're puppies you have to remember they have tiny bladders and will wake you up at all hours to 'go' then it turns into middle of the night 'playtime'.

I kind of loved it but some nights wished I could sleep thru that 2 am playtime thing - it was only my oldest who did that but getting smacked in the face with toys at that hour is something I'm glad stopped as they mature. now with me alone and they're so much older - they pretty much adjusted to MY sleep schedule but it takes time

I agree he wants to be near you - lots of people crate train and you should get some good help from them ! Good luck !

Congratulations on your new little boy. We have a 5 month old male named Cody. He sleeps in a crate and at first he would cry when we put him in. We've had him about 2 months now and at night he goes in his crate by himself. Now, his wake up time is another problem. At first he would sleep from 10pm to 6 am (he's a larger pup so his bladder must be pretty good). The past few nights for some reason he's been waking up at 4 a.m. (way too early for me even though I'm an early riser). I think I'm going to try a walk at night (we already walk every morning to so he isn't so hyper) to make sure he's good and tired and maybe he'll sleep longer. So my point is I guess there will be changes but we try to keep him on a schedule as much as possible.

As for the potty patch. We got one for Cody when we first got him. We live on a boat so we keep it just outside the door so we don't have to walk him outdoors all the time. He still goes outside in the grass too. Occasionally he doesn't want to go on the potty patch and we reinforce it with a treat (i.e. bribery). For us being persistent with both the potty patch and outside as options is important to us as we travel and there are time when he can't go outside on the grass. Good luck with you new baby.

I have a 12 week old who sleeps in his crate on the bed next to me :) The first night I had his great next to my bed on the floor but he cried so I slept on the floor haha and he was fine. The next night (and ever since then) the crate is in my bed and he sleeps so soundly. I can't wait til he's big enough to just curl up with me in bed!! :p

When Pixie was younger we would put her in her crate and cover it with a light blanket and the crate was in our walk in closet. She did find an would sleep all night. Being she is older now she sleeps on our bed between my DH and me.

I have also heard about a heart beat machine or something on that order that they can hear that acts like the mothers heart beat. Maybe someone else knows what I'm trying to say.

Yes if you don't want to have the crate in the bed with you or on the night stand next to you I would suggest just covering it up with a blanket. I do that in the mornings when I shower so he won't cry and he's so little that I don't want him roaming my apartment :) It's made a HUGE difference. Just lay with your pup til he falls asleep then lightly cover up his crate and he should sleep soundly til the morning. He'll get in a routine in no time! :p

If you have had him just a short time,it is only natural that he will cry the first few nights,guess it depends on if you wnat him in your bed or not

mine cried for several nights when I first got her,I put her in her crate,covered it and put her where is was fairly dark

15 years later she is still sleeping in her crate at night

Duke did that too when I first got him. So heart breaking to hear them cry, I put one of my tshirts in his little bed, which was next to my bed. I also put a pad not too far away and woke up every few hours or whenever he woke up and put him on the pad for a few minutes to train him. This happened for a couple weeks bc he was just a bit over 1lb at that time.
He now sleeps on my bed with me and I really enjoy it :) I know many others crate train so try out that option too and see what works better for your situation.

Ours cried for the frist couple of nights -- the addition of one of my shoes and T-shirt made him sleep more peacefully.

5 months later and he is still sleeping in the crate, with the occasional relapse if he hears something that disturbs him during the night (foxes at the moment): I then sleep with him on the sofa until morning.

The shoe and shirt are a wonderful idea. Just make sure if the shoe has laces to remove them as they can strangle in them and their is risk of them eating it as well.

The shoe was the dog's idea: What we noticed is that if I wasn't around (gone to the shops or working) he would lie in the hall with his head completely inside my shoe!
